Experienced Support Workers

Meliora Support Services

Join Meliora’s Brisbane team as a Support Worker

Meliora Support Services is a charity-based organisation working across disability and aged care in Brisbane and the South Burnett. In Brisbane, our HQ is based in Aspley, and at this time most of our clients are on the Northside.

We’re urgently seeking experienced Support Workers who want to be part of a strong, caring team that communicates well, works together, and takes the responsibility of the role seriously.

This is not a role for somebody looking to just get through a task list and head home. Good support work asks a lot more than that. It asks for presence, judgement, patience, follow-through, and the ability to work alongside people through all sorts of delicate, sensitive, practical, confronting, and messy human situations.

About the role

Depending on the participant and the shift, the work may include:

  • social and community support
  • personal care
  • domestic tasks and practical help around the home
  • transport and appointments
  • helping people stay connected to the people and places that are important to them
  • supporting both people with disability and older people in the community

Some shifts are straightforward. Others are not.

Support work can be wonderful one day, and the next day can ask a huge amount from you. Different participants bring different needs, personalities, histories, communication styles, routines, risks, and support requirements. You need to be able to adapt, think clearly, and work in a way that is steady and respectful.

At Meliora, we understand that things do not always work out the way they appear on paper. That is why our approach is to work with you, listen properly, understand what is actually challenging you from client to client, and collaborate on solutions. We want a practical grasp of what is going on in your shifts, so we can problem solve early, respond well, and help you keep building the kind of support that genuinely improves people’s lives.

Our whole communication, rostering and shift notes system is based around supporting our support workers, so they can do their job to the best of their ability.

What we’re looking for

We’re after people who are:

  • reliable and consistent
  • strong communicators
  • personally responsible
  • respectful, switched on, and good with people
  • able to follow directions and ask questions when unsure
  • willing to do the work that is needed, whether that is community access, personal care, transport, or practical help around the home
  • calm enough to handle sensitive or confronting situations well
  • thoughtful, observant, and able to notice what is really going on for the person in front of them
  • committed to treating people with dignity, as human beings

You will also need to have the following or a willingness to obtain:

  • driver's license
  • reliable, clean, comprehensively insured vehicle (you will have clients in your car)
  • blue card
  • NDIS worker check (NDISWC)
  • federal police check
  • current first aid and CPR
  • NDIS training modules

What we offer

We know great support workers are hard to find. From our side, we offer:

  • above-award rates based on your SCHADS level, qualifications, and experience
  • options ranging from casual, to part-time and full-time work
  • More money in your pocket: As a PBI Charity, we offer full income packaging, including for casual workers. You can earn a large portion of your salary tax-free, plus meal/entertainment benefits. This may effectively boost your take-home pay by thousands.
  • a caring and well-supported team
  • clear communication from management
  • concerns raised by staff being seen and responded to quickly
  • practical collaboration and support when things get difficult on shift
  • work that is varied, human, and never just paint-by-numbers
  • the chance to be part of a charity-based organisation doing useful work in the community

We also know life can get in the way. We're willing to be flexible and meet you where you're at, too. So if you feel interested but you're not sure whether Meliora is the right fit for your situation, apply anyway.

If you really want to work somewhere that takes support work seriously, listens to its staff, and comes from humble beginnings without ever forgetting it - we'd love to hear from you.
