Organiser - Musicians - Flexible Location

Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance
  • Full time, open to considering part time and job share
  • Flexible location, can be based anywhere nationally

MEAA has historically represented musicians in all industry sectors and in late 2018 redoubled efforts to organise freelance and gigging musicians with the launch of Musicians Australia. Since that time membership has grown rapidly and increasingly, powering a strategy to put a floor on performance fees, build solidarity and respect among musicians and fix a wide range of exploitative industry practices.

We are looking for an Organiser who can listen to and speak the language of musicians; who is able to identify and bring out the potential in our members and potential members, and; who is keen to support, build and facilitate member leadership.

Key duties include:

  • Working with the Musicians Director and team to implement, adjust and review the Musicians Australia plan
  • Organising by using all available and relevant tactics, tools and techniques, including:
    • Mapping and analysing the industry
    • Developing and implementing organising plans
    • Using face to face and digital organising tools
    • Leading worker development activities
    • Being a creative contributor to MEAA’s broader organising, industrial and communications team

Preferred attributes:

  • Strong communication skills and ability to play a leadership role amongst members
  • Understanding of adult learning and group development principles
  • Working knowledge and/or experience within the arts and entertainment industry
  • Proficient in organising frameworks and practices, including digital techniques and tools
  • Ability to identify and utilise opportunities and resolve problems
  • Advocacy, negotiation or dispute resolution skills
  • Industrial relations experience, including working knowledge of agreements and awards

The preferred candidate would have experience in arts/entertainment and/or organising experience with a proven ability to manage industrial and organising priorities.

The role involves intermittent evening and weekend work.

A commitment to trade union principles and workers’ rights is essential.

Remuneration is dependent on skills and experience.

The position is a national role, possibly but not exclusively based in Sydney, with a package dependent on skills and experience, plus 10.5% employer contribution to superannuation. You will also be entitled to 5 weeks annual leave each year plus an additional 3 days leave between Christmas and New Year.

A position description is attached.
