The opportunity:

This Research Assistant / Research Officer will contribute to research being conducted in the Genomics in Society group into offering additional findings to those having clinical genomic testing. In particular, the position will involve coding and analysis of interview and/or genetic counselling consultation transcripts and making significant contributions to academic publications, including drafting of manuscripts.

The appointee will be part of the Genomics in Society research team, which envisages genomic health care that engages and empowers people, delivered widely equitably, safely and competently. Our group brings together researchers with experience in genetic education, ethics, genetic counselling and evaluation, applying mixed methods. This unique blend of expertise has led to positioning of this group as among the world leaders in researching the clinical and societal implications of genomics.

The Genomics in Society group sits within the Genetics Theme at MCRI. Our current research portfolio includes projects associated with the Melbourne Genomics Health Alliance and the Acute Care Genomics flagship funded by the Medical Research Futures Fund Genomics Health Futures Mission.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Coding and analysing qualitative data using a range of approaches (e.g., inductive content, theory informed inductive, thematic)
  • Designing and conducting literature reviews (e.g., rapid evidence synthesis)
  • Making significant and /or independent contributions to academic publications
  • Participating in research independently and as a member of the research team

About you:

  • Masters or Doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline plus an appropriate level of expertise gained from a combination of experience, training or professional accreditation
  • Demonstrated experience of undertaking qualitative research
  • Experience in undertaking literature synthesis
  • Experience working on projects within the Victorian or Australian health sector, preferably hospital based care, is desirable
  • Basic understanding of biology, particularly genetics, is desirable
