An exciting opportunity to join the Nationwide Child and Family Service Excellence team which has been designed to create service delivery outcomes for young persons in our care. The team focuses on supporting, guiding and facilitating teams on areas such as service compliance, team-based support and local community/family engagement.

The First Nations Cultural Advisor is responsible for developing and supporting cultural planning for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander children and young people living in residential and out of home arrangements provided by Lifestyle Solutions. This is an identified position with respect to cultural competency required to undertake this role.

Own It - How we get the job done

The Aboriginal Cultural Advisor position is a newly created role within Lifestyle Solutions that will work to ensure that participating Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander families can benefit from the services we provide. Key responsibilities of the First Nations Cultural Advisor include:

  • Supporting Lifestyle Solutions staff in the development and delivery of Cultural Support Plans for children and young people in care who identify as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • Regularly review and assess progress and outcomes of Cultural Support Plans and goals with service delivery and leadership team members
  • Provide cultural governance for planning including endorsement of plans Lifestyle Solutions is responsible for and supporting caseworkers to include cultural plans from Departments or third parties
  • Work with ACCO’s (non-government organisations and local communities) to establish equal partnerships for the purpose of working collaboratively
  • Provide advice to Service Excellence Leadership teams to support decision making that addresses strategic and operational cultural readiness
  • Build the capacity of service delivery teams to implement culturally sensitive, safe and responsive practice through advice and education provision as required
  • Allocate, prioritise and perform work in accordance with relevant regulatory frameworks and organisational policies and procedures
  • Keep team members, carers and families updated about events, programs and activities available within the local Aboriginal communities
  • Undertaking organisation-provided professional development as required to maintain current skills and knowledge that are relevant to their role

Make It Matter - What you will bring to make a difference in other's lives

As a First Nations Cultural Advisor, you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Knowledge of issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) people and communities in the context of family
  • Knowledge and or lived experience on the issues impacting ATSI children and young people residing in statutory out of home care
  • Knowledge and or lived experience around the social determinates of health impacting on ATSI people
  • Current Driving Licence
  • Comprehensive understanding of culturally appropriate contemporary engagement with ATSI families
  • Extensive knowledge of issues impacting on Aboriginal people and communities in contemporary society
  • Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with ATSI people
  • Strong communication skills both spoken and written, with the ability to adapt communication styles depending on the setting

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of Evidence-Based service provision
  • Cross-cultural awareness, knowledge and communication skills that would assist the Advisor to support service delivery and engagement with other culturally and/or linguistically diverse families and communities (eg Indonesian) in addition to ATSI peoples
