Board Member (Voluntary) - Launceston

Launceston Community Legal Centre

WHAT WE DO

We are a not-for-profit service initially established in 1986 as the Northern Community Welfare Rights Service to provide free legal advice to anyone in the community. In 1991 we became the Launceston Community Legal Centre Inc.

“Our Mission” is to promote social justice by improving access to the legal system. We do this by providing free legal assistance, support, and information to all members of our community, and prioritise those experiencing disadvantage.

OUR CHALLENGE

In today’s competitive funding environment, we want to ensure LCLC can not only continue to provide our current services but expand our capacity to reach those most in need in our catchment area. We have identified five focus areas in our Strategic Plan which we will work towards over the next two years.

THE ROLE

We are seeking applicants with a strong sense of social justice and belief in the importance of accessible legal services for disadvantaged members of the community.

We are specifically looking for someone with one or more of the following skill sets:

  • Legal practitioners from the Launceston area
  • IT knowledge or experience
  • HR experience

We also value diversity on our board. Women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, culturally and linguistically diverse people, young people, disabled people, and people from the LGBTIQ+ community are particularly encouraged to apply.

We encourage those living in communities outside Launceston to apply.

This is your opportunity to stand out and show leadership in a growing organisation that is already well-regarded by government, stakeholders and our communities.

Time Commitment

Board members are expected to attend bi-monthly board meetings and to read board materials in advance of meetings to enable active participation. Currently our board meetings are held on a weekday evening. Attendance at meetings may be online. Board members will also responsibly represent the LCLC in the community and advocate for LCLC mission, programs and services as appropriate.

DURATION OF role

Board terms are for 12 months, from the date of the AGM. The next AGM will be held in September 2024, however, casual appointments may occur at any time.
