About the Opportunity

This position is critical to the effective and efficient delivery of the Family Participation program. The role is to provide Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander families at risk of or involved with the Child Protection system the ability to actively participate in the planning process for addressing Child Protection concerns for their family through Family Led Decision Making meetings.

The Aboriginal Family Led Decision Making (AFLDM) program is based on traditional family values where the responsibility for bringing up children is shared by parents together with extended family and community and guided by the wisdom and experience of elders.

AFLDM encourages family members, extended family, Elders, Significant others in the child's life and where appropriate the child and/or young person, to meet and make decisions about the safety and wellbeing of children and/or young people who are involved in the Child Protection system.

Our Ideal candidate will possess

  • Minimum Diploma of Child, Youth and Family Intervention or similar
  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage and extensive community and cultural connectedness
  • An awareness and understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities and cultures and the historical and contemporary issues relevant to the needs of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients, and proven capacity to communicate appropriately
  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of child protection issues, legislation and requirements and relevant issues specific to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and families
  • Demonstrated experience in overseeing and coordinating case management processes and procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to record accurate and consistent case notes
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a minimum of direction and to effectively communicate with and work collaboratively as part of a team, and to contribute to the development of creative and innovative services
  • Proficiency in MS Office, use of contemporary office equipment and data entry

Desirable, but not mandatory:

  • Brief intervention counselling skills
  • Previous experience in a family support and or advocacy role

This is an identified position to be filled by an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander as permitted by and arguable under sections 25, 104 and 105 of the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act (1991).

It is a requirement that all successful candidates must have a Working with Children Clearance and are willing to undergo a National Police Check prior to commencing employment.
