About Jubilee Australia Research Centre

Jubilee is a not-for-profit research centre based in Surry Hills, Sydney. We engage in research and advocacy to promote economic justice for communities in the Asia-Pacific region and accountability for Australian corporations and government agencies operating there.

Geographically, our work is focussed on Papua New Guinea, Bougainville, Fiji and the Solomon Islands.

We work on many exciting issues, including:

• The Save the Sepik campaign to save Papua New Guinea’s longest river from the catastrophic impacts of the largest copper and gold mine ever proposed in PNG history;
• The fight against the first-ever coal mine and coal-fired power station being developed in PNG;
• Preventing export credit agencies (government-owned and supported financial institutions) from financing fossil fuel developments;
• Australian government policies which undermine sustainable economies and livelihoods and economic justice for our neighbours in the Pacific and beyond;
• Several other projects investigating and exposing Australian corporations operating in the Asia Pacific region who are involved in environmentally destructive behaviour and breaches of human rights, including a lack of free, prior and informed consent.

About this role:

We are seeking a candidate with a commitment to our mission, who is passionate about economic justice and corporate accountability. This role works closely with the Executive Director and Campaigns Director in fulfilling Jubilee’s vision of greater accountability in the Asia-Pacific region. As Jubilee’s Research Director, you will:

• Research and write reports, briefing papers, and other advocacy materials.
• Edit research reports authored by others and assist in their progress to publication.
• Provide research oversight and assistance to our other projects and campaigns.
• Lead and implement advocacy strategy on selected key projects.
• Liaise with project partners in-country via Zoom.
• Work closely with the other team members to develop and implement media strategies, including developing and maintaining relationships with key media stakeholders and writing media releases
• Assist the Campaigns Director and Executive Director in further campaign and research tasks to support Jubilee’s work.

• Exceptional skills in research.
• Exceptional skills in critical analysis.
• Exceptional skills in written communication, including storytelling.
• Demonstrated excellence in maintaining strong partnerships with stakeholders.

• Excellent ability to effectively manage your time and multi-task across projects while maintaining attention to detail.
• Bachelor’s degree in International Development, Social Science, Law, Economics or associated discipline.
• At least two years of experience working in a research, policy, or advocacy position.

Desirable:

• Expertise in one or more of the following areas: mining, climate change, corporate accountability or indigenous peoples rights.
• Experience in company engagement.
