About the program

The Next Steps Program is a highly regarded Specialist Homelessness Service, funded by the Department of Health & Human Service.

Next Steps offers a unique multi component, early intervention program providing intensive case management and residential support to young people between 16 and 24 who have involvement with the justice system and are experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

Dillon House is a key component of the Next Steps program, providing structured residential 24/7 supported accommodation for up to three young people at any given time for a 12 month placement, with the option of extension if desired, with the goal of securing appropriate, affordable, long-term housing post tenancy.

About the role

Dillon House is seeking qualified, experienced and enthusiastic worker to join the program in the role as an After Hours Support Worker. The position is part time (approx 47 hours per fortnight), based in North Carlton.

The key objectives of the role are;

  • Provide afterhours support, incorporating sleepover shifts on a rotating roster, to young people residing at Dillon House
  • Build respectful relationships with young people
  • Provide a safe and welcoming place to live, including assisting young people to develop their independent living skills
  • Work collaboratively with the case work staff, to ensure a consistent approach to supporting young people and meeting their needs as identified in their case plan

Candidate requirements

This role will suit a candidate with the following skills and experience:

  • An ability and commitment to work as part of a team to support young people within a residential environment.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in working effectively with young people experiencing substance misuse, mental health concerns, violent or aggressive behaviours and other complex problems associated with offending behaviour.
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills, including high level objectivity and capacity to work in a professional manner with disadvantaged and challenging young people
  • Demonstrated ability to provide sound assessment of crisis situations including; substance misuse, first aid and challenging behaviours.
  • An awareness and understanding of the issues that face young people who have experienced institutionalisation and/or have had contact with the criminal justice system.
  • A demonstrated ability to work autonomously while working to team goals.
  • Capacity to fulfil reporting and administrative requirements associated with the position
  • Capacity and commitment to contribute to the wider development Jesuit Social Service
  • Understanding and sympathy with the mission and ethos of Jesuit Social Services
  • Current Victorian driver’s licence
  • Working with Children Check card.

A base salary of $70,405 per annum (pro-rata), plus generous salary packaging benefits are available, together with ongoing professional and career development.
