Role Overview

The primary purpose of this role is to increase the presence, volume and impact of information and knowledge about type 1 diabetes research conducted in Australia and globally. The Research Communications Officer will prepare and maintain a portfolio of research information and materials for diverse audience, support JDRF’s management of research programs across research and medical institutions/organisations.

Key Accountabilities

Prepare and maintain portfolio of research information and materials

  • Lead the preparation of lay-language scientific updates and research summaries for internal and external distribution through diverse channels such as reports, website, social media, promotional materials etc;
  • Investigate, gather and summarise relevant information/data for development of research submissions, policy/discussion papers, evaluation of research initiatives and as well as preparation of lay-extracts of research for the purpose of external communications of progress outcomes;
  • Work as a liaison between research team and other teams within the organisation ( such as marketing, community outreach and government relations teams for the purpose of sharing research impact, preparation of annual progress reports, and other research related materials.

Supports implementation of written research initiatives

  • Supports the development of scientific programs, Agenda’s and other materials for JDRF’s led workshops and similar initiatives in Australia;
  • Assist in supporting current Australian researchers and attracting new researchers into the field of type 1 diabetes;
  • Act as a point of liaison with other JDRF affiliates for the purpose of exchange of science communication and progress information relating to research projects;

Supporting Research Programs

  • Develops high quality research-related material for JDRF’s communications, research promotion, research partners, science and health policy updates including hard copy publications, advertisements, videos, presentations;
  • Prepares reports on research progress, summarises information on research initiatives communicates impact and outcomes JDRF initiatives.

Essential Capabilities

  • A strong communicator who writes with impact and is skilled at tailoring language for the relevant audiences with attention to accuracy

  • Strong organisational skills including strength in delivering competing priorities to high quality standards within tight timeframes

Essential Knowledge & Experience

  • At least four years of experience in a role that included responsibility for writing materials of a scientific nature for diverse audiences.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree or higher qualification in science, medicine or a research-related field.
  • Experience with data/information collection from diverse sources, evaluation and presentation of outcomes.
  • Knowledge of the science of diabetes and of diabetes research activities and issues is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in scientific research would also be desirable.
