About the Role

This pivotal role leads ICAN's financial health, ensuring efficient operations and strategic decision-making. Your financial expertise directly empowers Indigenous Australians and strengthens their communities. You'll guide a high-performing team, fostering innovation and collaboration.

We are seeking a highly motivated and results-oriented professional with a minimum of 5+ years of experience in a senior finance and administration role. A strong understanding of Australian accounting standards (AASB) and financial reporting frameworks is essential.

Key duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Lead and manage the finance and administration team, providing training and guidance and mentorship
  • Prepare and present comprehensive monthly financial reports, analysing finances for communication to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to organisational strategy by providing relevant, timely, and accurate financial information and advice.
  • Manage all routine financial activities: payroll, budgeting, accounts, banking, assets & liabilities, and general journals.
  • Implement and document internal controls to identify and mitigate financial risks.
  • Identify and resolve financial issues to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Develop and monitor budgets for the organisation, business units, and funding programs.
  • Oversee cash flow and manage surpluses and shortages.
  • Prepare and submit financial acquittals for grant funding.
  • Utilise cost accounting methods to calculate service delivery costs.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly for accurate reporting.
  • Maintain the asset register and procure assets within delegations.
  • Advise on borrowing arrangements and other liabilities.
  • Coordinate and assist auditors during financial audits.

Essential Criteria

  • Undergraduate degree or similar in accounting, business, or finance discipline or equivalent tertiary qualification with substantial experience; or
  • Postgraduate certificate in work related discipline or equivalent relevant qualification
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in a finance and administration role, preferably within the non-profit sector

Key Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated experience in financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting. Strong understanding of Australian accounting standards (AASB).
  2. Proven ability to maintain and retrieve financial records accurately. High-level organisational skills and ability to follow defined financial processes. Proficient in XERO and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  3. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills (written and verbal). Ability to provide clear explanations, options, support, and direction to staff members.
  4. Skilled at developing, fostering, and maintaining constructive working relationships. Experience coordinating the flow of documents through an administrative team.
  5. Demonstrated experience in a management role, with specific experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people being highly desirable.
