  • An exciting opportunity is currently available for a Compliance Officer to join the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) team at Hudson Institute of Medical Research, Australia's leading Medical Research Institute.

The role

The Compliance Officer will be responsible to advise Hudson researchers on the relevant policies and procedures, Commonwealth and State Legislative and Regulatory requirements, relevant Australian Standards, and the reporting processes required by regulatory bodies. You will have relevant experience, knowledge, maturity and an ability to apply standards and regulations to the medical research sector. You will use your highly developed communication skills to provide comprehensive, high-quality and proactive advice and support on appropriate research and biosafety compliance frameworks. You will assist with the development, implementation and delivery of research and laboratory resources and training programs for a wide range of people including research and professional staff and students. This role is also responsible for maintaining, administering, and overseeing OGTR laboratory certification, drugs & poisons licences, radiation licences and quarantine import permits for the Hudson Institute.

The BioSafety Compliance Officer will report to the Health & Safety Manager and maintain close working relationships with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) team and Laboratory and Technical Services (LATS) team.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Education / Qualifications desired:

  • A relevant tertiary degree and a minimum of 3 years laboratory/research compliance experience

Knowledge and skills:

  • Extensive experience and demonstrated achievement in a similar role in a large university or research institute organisation with experience and knowledge of biological risk, compliance, and regulatory frameworks within scientific or medical laboratory environments
  • Knowledge of or demonstrated capacity to understand and interpret the legislation, regulations and standards that impact research involving biological agents (such as the Gene Technology Act 2000 (Cth), Biosecurity Act (2015) (Cth), Defence Trade Controls Act 2012 (Cth), National Health Security Act 2007 (Cth) and the relevant Australian/New Zealand Standards) in a complex organisational context and ability to communicate and advise stakeholders on new or emerging situations
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of OGTR regulatory requirements and proven experience working within a PC2 containment facility
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills with significant experience in developing and maintaining positive stakeholder relationships through effective communication and collaboration within a large and complex organisation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate clearly complex and/or technical matters to a variety of different audiences, and ability to produce a wide range of documents and reports for committees and governance groups
  • Exceptional organisational skills, with demonstrated ability to work autonomously and flexibly under pressure, manage competing demands and prioritise workload to meet deadlines
  • Proven experience with the development and or/implementation of compliance awareness, communication and/or training activities
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively as a member of a small professional specialist team, handle sensitive and confidential issues maturely
  • Highly developed computer literacy, particularly using Microsoft Office suite and google suite applications, database/records management systems and web technology, including the ability to learn and adopt new models of communication and software packages as required

EMPLOYMENT TERMS

This position is a fixed term contract role in a Full time or Part time (0.8 – 1.0 FTE) capacity. Salary is based on Scientific Support Group ranging from Tap 7-8 dependent on level of experience. Superannuation of 11% and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
