Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council (AH&MRC) is dedicated to assisting Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) across the four regions (Metropolitan, Northern, Southern and Western) of NSW to ensure they have access to an adequately resourced and skilled workforce enabling the ACCHSs to provide their local Aboriginal communities with holistic and culturally appropriate primary health care and Aboriginal health-related services.

About the role:

As the Health Programs Officer, you will be directly reporting to the Head of Member Engagement and will be responsible for working as a multidisciplinary team to design and deliver regional and state-wide health programs to support and strengthen Member Services and promote and protect the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people across NSW through engagement with Member Services and having an understanding of the Public Health needs of Aboriginal communities across NSW.

Key accountabilities

  • Work collaboratively with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) to respond to community needs through providing appropriate workforce development opportunities, health program planning and evaluation, and advocacy to address health gaps within Aboriginal communities across NSW.
  • Develop, implement, and participate in regional networks with ACCHOs to support collaboration, workforce development and networking opportunities to address relevant health issues.
  • Work collaboratively with ACCHOs to identify and implement relevant Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Work collaboratively with the ACCHSs to co-design support, implement, and evaluate ACCHSs Health Programs and Activities.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Certificate IV qualifications in Public Health, Health Promotion, Community Development, Project Management, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years’ demonstrated experience in working with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people in program delivery.

Essential Requirements

  • Strong project management skills within a complex and diverse stakeholder environment.
  • Sound knowledge of project management principles and their application in a program environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the health issues impacting Aboriginal Communities i.e., ‘Chronic Disease, Social and Emotional Wellbeing etc.’ and their impact on the lives of clients and their families.
  • Understanding of, and experience in, developing, delivering, and evaluating health programs and initiatives.
  • Experience in facilitation and conducting workshops.
  • Understanding of integrated Aboriginal health promotion principles including Aboriginal health equity, place-based approaches, and social determinants of health.
  • Experience in working collaboratively with others on projects and programs.
  • Demonstrated culturally safe practices.
  • Proven ability to work independently.
  • Strong writing skills to develop high-quality written documents.
  • Ability to travel across the allocated region to the local ACCHOs and communities on a regular basis.
  • High level of written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to liaise, consult and negotiate with a diverse range of clients and stakeholders.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships within the local community.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to demonstrate empathy when required.
  • Current valid Driver’s Licence.
  • Ability to hold a National Police Check.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience working within Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Sector.
  • Experience working with relevant agencies, non-government organisations, community groups and medical professionals at all levels.

Remuneration: The Remuneration for this role is $90,000.00 plus superannuation.
