About Wintawari Guruma Aboriginal Corporation (WGAC)

Wintawari Guruma Aboriginal Corporation (WGAC) is establishing a Ranger Program to look after the stunning Eastern Guruma country in the Hamersley Ranges in the Tom Price, Karijini area of the Pilbara.  

WGAC is seeking an experienced and motivated person to help develop a team of Eastern Guruma Rangers. The Ranger Program Coordinator will work closely with the CEO and the Directors to lead the ranger team in delivering cultural, land and natural resource management activities across Eastern Guruma Country.

The Ranger team of 4-6 Indigenous men and women is currently being recruited. The Ranger Program will be well resourced with significant existing support for heritage and land management activities from tourism, mining and government interests.

About the role

Strong communication skills and a passion for providing on-the-job training and mentoring is a must. Experience working with Traditional Owners in land management is also expected.

To be successful in this position you have to be able to live, travel and operate in remote situations. The Ranger Program Coordinator would ideally be based in Karratha but could be based in Perth.

Excellent salary and conditions are on offer. Assistance with relocation will also be considered.

Key duties include:

  • Coordinating the day-to-day activities of the Rangers.
  • Providing workplace leadership and mentoring.
  • Ensuring effective day-to-day administration of the Ranger program including asset maintenance and management.
  • Planning or/and supervising field activities, including to remote locations.
  • Assisting researchers with on-country projects involving Rangers. 
  • Ensuring compliance with cultural protocols and organisational policies and procedures; and
  • Organising meetings with key stakeholders, monitoring the annual work plan.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  1. Demonstrable ability to effectively communicate and cooperate with Traditional Owners in developing work plans that directly support land management aspirations.
  2. Demonstrable ability to support and manage a remote field team, including ensuring staff competence and personal organisation, developing the ranger groups professionalism in implementing their work program.
  3. Relevant qualifications and experience. Significant practical experience in planning and implementing projects and activities related to natural and cultural resource management programs on Aboriginal lands. 
  4. Demonstrated leadership experience and confidence in working with Aboriginal communities and/or coordinating on-ground natural and cultural resource management projects. 
  5. Experience in working independently with minimal supervision in a remote area and demonstrated capacity to remain focused, positive and organised in a challenging work environment. 
  6. High level communication skills, ability to work with elders, and to both lead and support as a member of a team, in an indigenous-led organisation. 
  7. Sound knowledge of risk management procedures and practical experience implementing Health, Safety and Environment legislative requirements.
  8. Demonstrated experience in project management, including capacity to manage logistics for remote fieldwork.
  9. Experience in report writing and preparing grant applications and acquittals. 
  10. Experience in financial management of a program budget and ensuring compliance with administrative processes.  
  11. An ability to build networks and develop partnerships, working with the needs of a diverse range of relevant stakeholders. 
  12. Current valid driver’s license; off-road experience and recovery skills. Maintaining a licence is a condition of ongoing employment in this role.
  13. Working with Children’s Check (WCC) and Police Clearance or the ability to obtain them. 

Desirable:

  1. High level technical or trade skills relevant to the ranger program (i.e., fencing, construction, fire and weed management, GIS, cultural mapping, plant and animal identification, small engine maintenance, erosion remediation, water monitoring).
  2. High level of computer literacy and proficiency with personal computers including word processing, spreadsheet and data software.
