About Us

The Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group is a not-for-profit organisation operating under the Associations Incorporation Act 2014. It is a recognised biosecurity group under the Western Australia Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 and receives funding from the Declared Pest Account (DPA) administered by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. The DPA is made up of funds collected by a Declared Pest Rate on landowners in the Peel Harvey operational area who hold more than one hectare, and matched dollar for dollar by the state government. The Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 stipulates what Declared Pest Rates can be spent on, including the following:

  • To promote public awareness of the measures being taken, or required to be taken, to control declared pests.
  • To carry out measures to control declared pests.
  • To purchase capital assets required in connection with the above activities.

About the role

The role of the PHBG Communications Officer is to support the PHBG’s internal and external communications strategy, write and disseminate publicity material, respond to inquiries from the public and media, and coordinate promotional events. The Communications Officer will report to the PHBG Executive Officer.

To succeed as a communications officer, you should be able to think creatively, and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Previous experience as a communications officer or equivalent experience in a similar role is strongly desired.

The key responsibilities of this role are:

  • Collaborate with management to develop and implement an effective communications strategy based on our target audience.
  • Write, edit, and distribute content, including newsletter, media releases, website content, annual reports, and other marketing material that communicates the organisation's activities, products and/or services.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with journalists, and maintain a media database.
  • Seek opportunities to enhance the reputation of the organisation, and coordinate public events as required.
  • Develop video resources covering declared pest management information, demonstrations or instructions.
  • Maintain records of media coverage and collate analytics and metrics.
  • Develop relationships with local landholders capturing their experiences with declared pest management.
  • Work closely alongside PHBG staff to record program activities and share success stories.

About You

We are looking for someone who meets the criteria below and is keen to work Part time at 0.6 FTE.

You can choose which location you would prefer to work from in Pinjarra and/or Waroona. Remote working arrangements (working from home) will also be considered. Laptop and Phone provided, and the use of organisational vehicle where available. 

The salary package includes a base salary of $65k- $80k pa pro rata dependent on experience and 11% superannuation.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • High level of capacity for self-motivation, developed time management skills, and an ability to meet deadlines.
  • Minimum of 2 - 5 years relevant experience in a similar role.
  • Friendly, approachable and a good communicator with a 'team' attitude.
  • Strong customer service focus, with the ability to build and maintain excellent working relationships, undertake effective community engagement and share technical pest management information with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Understanding of and interest in local environmental, agricultural and/or social issues.
  • Flexible, adaptable and self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to work flexible hours as required.
  • High level of written and verbal communication skills for a range of audiences, with experience reporting to government and non-government bodies.
  • High level computer proficiency.
  • Proficiency in design and publishing software or a willingness to learn
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Good time management and organisational skills.
  • Proficient in social media platforms.
  • Experience in the use of Campaign Monitor or equivalent e-marketing software.
  • Experience in the use of Adobe and/or Canva
  • Experience in the use of customer relationship management software.

Desirable

  • Demonstrated experience of working in a not-for-profit organisation and with a voluntary management committee.
  • Knowledge of the area serviced by the PHBG, particularly in relation to declared pests.
  • Experience living or working in the Peel Harvey
  • Established professional and community networks in the area serviced by the PHBG.
  • Experience in the use of G-Suite including Docs, Sheets, Forms, Sites and Drive.

General

The following are considered basic prerequisites for the position.

  • Australian residency or eligibility to legally work in Australia.
  • Current ‘C’ class driver’s license and reliable car with ability to travel in the Peel Harvey Region
  • Ability to obtain National Police Check.
  • High level of capacity for self-motivation, developed time management skills, and an ability to meet deadlines.
