The Mental Health Education Program (MHEP) supports our organisation's goal but delivering engaging, evidence-based mental health education to school students, staff and parents across Australia, with a strong focus on regional, remote and rural communities.

The program strengthens mental health literacy, enhances school capacity, and supports young people and families to access clear help‑seeking pathways, including local headspace centres and community‑based services.

what you'll do

Reporting to the Program Manager, the MHEP Team Lead supports the development and implementation of the national strategic work plan, ensures high‑quality program delivery, and leads a team of MHEP Consultants working across metropolitan, regional, rural and remote communities.

Working in this role, you will:

  • Lead, empower and support a high‑performing team of MHEP Consultants.
  • Champion a positive, inclusive and collaborative team culture aligned with headspace values.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring and professional learning that builds staff capability, confidence and cohesion.
  • Ensure consistent delivery standards, content quality, and community engagement across the team.
  • Respond flexibly to changing needs, supporting consultants to adjust delivery, travel and planning as required.
  • Ensure high‑quality data recording, accurate attendance tracking and effective program evaluation across the team.
  • Lead strategic engagement with key education stakeholders across sectors.
  • Regular weekly travel across metropolitan regions during school terms.
  • Minimum of four weeks of intrastate and interstate travel per term to regional, rural and remote communities.
  • Additional travel for team planning days, national meetings and conferences.

In this role, you may engage with young people and families navigating complex mental health and wellbeing concerns, including distressing or sensitive situations. We are committed to supporting our staff through supervision and reflective practice and encourage applicants to consider how this work may impact them personally.

what you'll bring

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Tertiary qualification in mental health, education, training, community development, or equivalent experience (minimum 3 years).
  • Ability to undertake extensive weekday travel with overnight stays intrastate and interstate.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in youth mental health and/or education and training.
  • Experience facilitating workshops with young people, families, and professionals.
  • Strong capability in stakeholder engagement, particularly with school systems.
  • Experience developing training and resources across multiple formats.
  • Highly developed communication skills (written and verbal).
