PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Volunteering is at the heart of Habitat for Humanity Australia, driving impact both locally and globally. As the Volunteer Engagement Specialist, you'll support the delivery of meaningful volunteer experiences across our Brush with Kindness and Global Village programs, ensuring every interaction fosters connection, safety and purpose.

Brush with Kindness is our flagship Australian volunteering program, bringing community volunteers and corporate teams together to support charities providing shelter to people in need. Global Village offers immersive international experiences, where volunteers build safe housing alongside communities across the Asia-Pacific.

This is ideal for a highly organised people person who loves creating memorable experiences and making a meaningful difference. This role will focus on delivering exceptional volunteer journeys - from digital engagement through to in-person experiences - helping to grow a community of passionate Habitat advocates while building a sustainable pipeline of support for our mission.

This is a full-time position, based in Sydney and reporting to the Programs and Partnerships Experience Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Design and Deliver Exceptional Volunteer Experiences

  • Coordinate volunteer journeys, resources and communications across Brush with Kindness and Global Village programs.
  • Develop positive relationships with community and corporate volunteers to support engagement, advocacy and retention.
  • Support the delivery of volunteer recognition initiatives and memorable milestone experiences.
  • Support fundraising activities and volunteer engagement through supporter outreach and calls.

Support Global Village Volunteer Engagement

  • Coordinate all volunteer logistics and administration in accordance with established Global Village processes.
  • Deliver engaging volunteer communications, pre-departure briefings and ongoing support before, during and after builds.
  • Maintain accurate volunteer records, build documentation, schedules and impact data across systems.
  • Improve and maintain key build resources, including itineraries, emergency procedures and incident documentation.

Support Brush with Kindness Volunteer Engagement

  • Coordinate the onboarding of community and corporate volunteers onto our Volunteer Hub.
  • Support the delivery and ongoing improvement of the Brush with Kindness volunteer experience.

Volunteer Team Administration

  • Act as the first point of contact for all volunteer enquiries and expressions of interest.
  • Provide responsive administrative support to ensure effective delivery of volunteer programs.
  • Troubleshoot system issues, escalating where required.
  • Ensure all deadlines and requirements for program attendance are met by participating volunteers.
  • Coordinate volunteer training, compliance, and safety records (including first aid coverage across programs).
  • Operate under the guidance of the Program and Partnerships Experience Manager, assisting with emerging team priorities and operational requirements as needed.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in communications, events, marketing, tourism, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience of 2 to 3 years in volunteer coordination, program delivery or customer engagement.
  • Digital systems capability and confidence managing data and communications.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build relationships across different teams and cultures.

Desirable:

  • Experience with Raisely, Rosterfy, Salesforce or similar volunteer and fundraising platforms.
  • Prior experience in the not-for-profit space, or an interest in social impact, housing, or community development.
  • Experience coordinating or supporting international travel programs, group travel or study tours.
  • Basic knowledge of safety, risk or safeguarding practices.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

HFHA requires all employees take seriously their ethical responsibilities to safeguarding our intended beneficiaries, their communities, and all those with whom we work.   • Identify and report any safeguarding concerns in line with the organisation’s protocols.
  • Establish an understanding of child protection laws, policies and best practices in Australia.
  • Be aware of indicators of abuse, neglect and exploitation in children and vulnerable adults.
  • Demonstrate ability to identify and respond effectively to safeguarding concerns.
  • Have knowledge of mandatory reporting obligations and safeguarding escalation procedures.
  • Display familiarity with trauma-informed approaches when working with vulnerable individuals.
  • Present capacity to uphold ethical standards and demonstrate professional integrity.
  • Commit to continuous learning, including adaptation to updated safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Report all safeguarding concerns to HFHA’s designated Safeguarding Officer.

Roles within HFHA may involve different levels of direct or indirect exposure to vulnerable groups. The level of safeguarding measures required depends on the nature of the role. This is a High-Exposure Role: This position involves direct and regular contact with children or vulnerable adults and requires:

  • safeguarding compliance and training
  • comprehensive background checks;
  • additional/continuous training; and
  • close supervision.
