Remuneration: Starting from $33.40 per hour including Superannuation

About Gunawirra:

  • Since 2008, Gunawirra’s holistic programs have focused on breaking the cycle of trauma and disadvantage among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
  • Our founding pillars are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and psychoanalytic thinking which jointly inform all our work.
  • Our multi-disciplinary teams provide early intervention to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers and their children from conception to five years. Along with providing teacher support to rural preschools across NSW.
  • Our programs introduce psychotherapy, art therapy, speech therapy and group therapy to reverse this downward spiral.
  • Guided by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elders and non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander specialists.

About the role:

  • The position is responsible for working in conjunction with a small team in the delivery of culturally appropriate mental health services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community as a member of the multi-disciplinary primary health care team.
  • Provide high quality assessment and intervention for clients within a professional, confidential and culturally safe manner, in keeping with accepted best practice standards through clinic-based appointments and group programs.
  • Work closely with the Clinical Manager and Executive team to support regular tracking of progress in monitoring client progress and care, ensuring feedback is provided to staff and supporting implementation of changes in response to identified gaps.
  • Maintain accurate client records, including the collection and collation of statistical information in order to forecast demand for services and allocation of budgets.
  • Provide periodic performance and evaluation reports to the Executive team as required.
  • Provide supervision and support as appropriate to less experienced staff, Aboriginal Health Workers, Allied Health Assistant and students and provide in-service education in areas relevant to mental health service provision as required.
  • Provide input into the development of clinical practices, procedures and protocols within the work area.
  • Actively participate in professional development including continuing education opportunities provided through the organisation and regular clinical and cultural supervision.

What you bring:

  • Undergraduate degree in Psychoanalysis, Psychology, Counselling, Social Work or other appropriate Human Services.
  • Master degree in Psychoanalysis, Psychology, Psychotherapy, Counselling, Social Work or other appropriate Human Services would be highly desirable.
  • Cultural knowledge of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people would be desirable.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the health issues impacting the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers and children and a strong commitment to improving health outcomes.
  • Demonstrated skill in working autonomously in a primary care setting, in particular the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team with a sound understanding of your role as a Mental Health clinician in this context.
  • Demonstrated clinical experience working with families impacted by trauma.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clinical services of a complex nature, where established principles, procedures and methods require expansion, adaptation and modification.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues, supervisors, managers and stakeholders regarding service delivery improvement opportunities and consumer outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in supervision of students at undergraduate levels and less experienced staff in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary health care.
