About Tipping Point

Our vision is for strong and resilient communities empowered to create a fairer, more just world by dismantling the oppressive systems that fuel climate change. Our current campaigns call for big coal, oil and gas polluters to pay their fair share for the costs of climate damage – not communities.

We’re a small team of committed campaigners and organisers who provide behind-the-scenes support for grassroots climate justice movements to scale and win transformational change. We supported the Stop Adani movement to massively constrain the size of the Carmichael coal mine, we helped the students make their Climate Strikes massive, we supported grassroots networks to stop NAB financing Whitehaven Coal, and we continue to support the Wangan and Jagalingou Cultural Custodians to protect their Country and human rights.

We believe that climate change disproportionately hurts the most marginalised people in society — including First Nations people, people of colour, people from working class backgrounds, women and LGBTQIA+ people. We believe that these communities must be centred in the work we do. Hence, we strongly encourage applications from people with these identities or who are members of other marginalised communities.

We are a national project of Friends of the Earth Australia. For more information: www.tippingpoint.org.au.

This role

Tipping Point is looking for a Councils Campaigner and Organiser to lead the strategy for Communities for Climate Compensation – a growing network of councils and communities who want to see big coal, oil and gas export corporations pay their fair share for the costs of climate damage.

Since launching in March this year, 7 local councils have passed motions calling for a Climate Compensation Fund paid for by a levy on coal, oil and gas exports. The motion was even supported at the recent National Assembly of Local Governments.

Over the next 12 months, this role will lead the strategy to secure 30+ local council motions, and to ensure the policy is a top priority for the Australian Local Government Association’s (ALGA) federal advocacy.

Key responsibilities

This role will require you to work closely with Tipping Point’s small staff team, along with diverse partners and volunteers.

You will be required to:

  • Lead the strategy to grow support for a Climate Compensation Fund at the local council level and with state and national local government associations
  • Develop relationships with councillors and mayors and resource them to lead this work in their local councils and within their state and national associations
  • Work with the Climate Media Centre to amplify local wins and stories by identifying and coordinating spokespeople and approving media releases
  • Work with partner organisations to ensure Tipping Point’s local council strategy is contributing to the broader movement’s state and federal campaign goals
  • Along with the wider team, contribute to resourcing a network of grassroots community groups to design and implement local council campaigns – including writing guides and templates and delivering training in-person and online
  • Along with a wider team of staff and volunteer organisers, directly support a small number of local teams in building their council campaigns

About You - selection criteria

If you meet most of the criteria and are willing to learn, please consider applying. We value both paid and volunteer experience.

The best fit for this role is someone who:

  • Has a passion for climate justice and is committed to grassroots organising and movement-building as a path to achieve this vision
  • Is highly motivated, has the ability to autonomously lead their own projects within a collaborative team, and knows when to ask for help and advice
  • Has a significant track record designing and implementing progressive campaigns that have made a tangible impact in the world
  • Can turn high level strategy into actionable campaign timelines, and knows when to shift plans to harness opportunities or respond to changing contexts
  • Enjoys working with and supporting volunteers and community groups to participate in campaigns
  • Is confident to work with a wide range of stakeholders including decision makers, partner organisations, journalists and researchers
  • Has attention to detail and a high level of accuracy on campaign subject matter, but can also distill complex information into compelling public messages
  • With Tipping Point’s support, is committed to developing core self-management skills, including decision making, prioritisation and delegation, peer coaching, boundary setting, and asking for help

You don’t need to be a media officer, researcher, or digital campaigner, but you will need:

  • Basic media skills, including identifying story opportunities, working with spokespeople, and working with media leads on plans and releases
  • Basic research skills, like synthesising existing reports, creating quick turnaround fact sheets, and scoping and briefing larger projects to dedicated researchers
  • Basic digital campaign skills, including updating webpages, managing events, correctly managing supporter data, sending blast emails and text messages

  • Experience working with local councils as a lever to create positive social or environmental change
  • Experience resourcing and supporting networks of volunteers to implement and deliver locally tailored campaigns as part of a national strategy
