Fitzroy Legal Service is a community-based organisation, independent of government, dedicated to assisting the most marginalised members of the community with legal information, advice and representation, as well as championing law reform and conducting public interest litigation. Our services are offered across the Cities of Darebin and Yarra, and the inner north of Melbourne. The experiences of clients, as heard through casework, informs the community legal education, community development, law reform and policy work of FLS.

Fitzroy Legal Service provides assistance in criminal and family violence matters to people who live in the City of Yarra who have legal matters listed at the local Magistrates’ Court, the Neighbourhood Justice Centre (‘NJC’). The NJC encompasses one court, and onsite services such as drug and alcohol, mental health, corrections, financial counselling, housing, and other types of community support. It is part of a Victorian Government strategy to reduce crime and disadvantage and to improve access to justice.

Fitzroy Legal Service Salso provides self-funded services in criminal law, infringements, intervention orders, and family law. These services are funded via grants of legal aid and fees clients in need of assistance but ineligible for legal aid or one of our specialised services.

about the role

The Senior Criminal Lawyer will work closely with another Senior Criminal Lawyer in the Criminal Law and Drug Outreach team to deliver services at the NJC and self-funded criminal law services. They will work with the Managing Lawyer, Criminal Law and Drug Outreach and the other Senior Criminal Lawyer to monitor our service delivery at the NJC and in the self-funded practice and importantly contributing to the NJC strategy, planning and evaluation activities, the ongoing development and promotion of the NJC model, and to ensure that FLS participation is relevant to meeting community need and the objectives of the NJC.
