The Assembly

The First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria (the Assembly) is the voice of Aboriginal people in Victoria in the next stage of the Treaty process. It is made up of Victorian Traditional Owners, elected by Aboriginal Communities, for Aboriginal Communities, to advance our rights, interests, and benefits.

Our mandate is to work with the State to establish Treaty processes that recognise our sovereignty as the First Peoples of Victoria, support self-determination, and realise our human rights, to make Victoria stronger for everyone.

Salary & Term

  • Ongoing, subject to continued funding
  • Salary of $88,955 - $100,930 per annum (full-time equivalent) plus superannuation, based on experience and expertise of the occupant.
  • This role is full-time, based in our Collingwood office when COVID restrictions ease.

KEY DUTIES

  • Assist with the development of relevant strategies and tactics, and be alert to opportunities as they arise
  • Daily monitoring of and posting to our social media channels
  • Overseeing our advertising on social media, including A/B testing, lead generation and precise targeting of audience segments
  • Creating engaging graphics to present our messages and content on social media, and creating/sourcing video, photos, audio etc.
  • General assistance with digital housekeeping such as creating and posting content on our website, backend administration of surveys, event registrations, petitions, setting up campaign email blasts etc.
  • Copywriting and proofreading content for various materials
  • Managing some outsourced digital media productions and print projects• Assisting with general online and offline campaigning and support building activities

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Essential:

  • Knowledge of Victorian Aboriginal communities
  • Detailed understanding of various social media platforms
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Strong digital graphic design skills
  • Confidence with various applications such as web publishing tools and customer relations management systems
  • Ability to navigate contested or politically sensitive spaces with nuanced, strategic messaging
  • Ability to work to challenging deadlines
  • Ability to take initiative and creatively problem solve

Desirable:

  • Intermediate to advanced skills in print design
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in photography and/or video production
  • Experience working on political or social justice campaigns

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA:

1. Demonstrated capacity to work with Aboriginal-controlled organisations Passionate about the rights of First Peoples’ self-determination. Able to navigate and ships with key stakeholders in this sector, while acting in accordance with the Assembly’s values.

2. Demonstrated experience managing social media accounts & targeting audiences At least three years’ experience in a communications role where managing social media accounts was a key part of your responsibilities. This includes demonstrated experience reaching targeted audiences organically or through partnerships. Business Manager functions on Facebook and equivalent functions on other platforms for target advertising.

3. Demonstrated experience producing/creating appropriate digital media content Ability to quickly create high quality graphics, such as tiles, from scratch or using templates, along with other types of suitable content such as video clips or audio grabs. Solid skills in managing websites and other digital plateforms.

4. Demonstrated experience crafting and implementing strategic messaging to advance a campaign’s objectives & understanding of the relevant social and political landscape. Experience in or deep understanding of messaging in either political, social justice behaviour change or law reform advocacy or campaigning.

5. Ability to take initiative and use creative and critical thinking to problem-solve. Ability to work collaboratevely in a small team, while taking initiative to brainstorm new idas, complete tasks in short timeframes and problem-solve.
