Family Advocacy

Family Advocacy is a state-wide, not for profit disability advocacy organisation that works with families to promote and defend the rights and interests of people who have developmental disability. This is achieved by strengthening the advocacy role and influence of families so that they can speak out with, and on behalf of their own family member, or for people with developmental disability more broadly.

We are managed and staffed by families and allies of people with disability, who recognise the issues and barriers that people with disability face. Our work is directed towards enabling and supporting families to speak up so people with disability can enjoy the same environment, lifestyle and living conditions that are available to the majority of Australians.

The role:

This role will be supporting the development of families’ skills and knowledge that enables effective advocacy with or, at times, on behalf of their family member with disability.

This occurs face to face, over the phone and virtually as we span across NSW. This role also involves the development and delivery of topical advocacy webinars and workshops with reach spanning around the state. The advocacy leadership development of the families is also a focus of this role with all leadership supported to bring about widespread change in the lives of people with disability.

What you will be doing:

  • Supporting and developing the advocacy leadership of families
  • Providing advocacy advice, follow-up and referrals
  • Developing advocacy information and resources for families
  • Promoting and coordinating advocacy events

Application must address each of the following criteria:

Essential Criteria

  • Commitment to the full inclusion of people with disability
  • Commitment to the role of families in people with disability life’s
  • Experience in providing advocacy supports
  • Experience in organising and promoting workshops
  • Experience in the development and delivery of workshop
  • Demonstrated capability of working with families
  • Demonstrated research skills
  • Demonstrated report writing skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Current driver’s licence and capacity to travel around NSW to attend and/or present seminars
  • Capacity to occasionally work weekends and evenings

Desirable Criteria

  • Lived experience of disability
  • Exposure to Social Role Valorisation

Based: Hornsby Hours: Full time Commencement: Immediately

Contract: 12 months Fixed Term with possibility of extension

Salary: Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services (SCHADS) Industry Award 2010, Level 4.4 – 5.3 (depending on experience), with salary packaging available on request.
