ABOUT US

Equity Generation Lawyers is a young, independent legal practice specialising in climate risk litigation. Our team of experienced lawyers has in-depth knowledge of Australian climate law and a flair for innovative, strategic legal action. We have developed a unique and powerful legal practice that is shaping climate change litigation in Australia. We have a number of world-leading cases on foot.

We are a dynamic and nimble organisation and we’re serious about supporting our people to thrive. We move fast and provide our clients - often those who are bearing the impacts of the climate crisis - sophisticated legal representation that may not be otherwise available to them.

We believe that a diversity of experiences and perspectives will help us build a stronger team and deliver better service for our clients. We strongly encourage First Nations Australians, people of colour, people living outside of cities (noting the role is in Sydney), and people living with a disability to apply.

ABOUT THE ROLE

A unique opportunity has arisen for a litigation lawyer (2-4 PAE) to work on landmark climate change matters across a range of Australian jurisdictions. You will be involved in advisory work and assist in developing new matters that deal with the climate and biodiversity crises.

An interest in climate change and its interaction with corporations law, trustee law and government processes is essential. Civil litigation experience and knowledge of Federal and Supreme Court processes are desirable. Up-to-date knowledge and understanding of national and international legal frameworks and standards, including the UNFCCC, IPCC, TCFD and TNFD will be viewed kindly.

ABOUT YOU

You have a problem solving mindset and an ability to think both logically and strategically. You are a solutions-focussed lawyer who enjoys applying your skills across a range of legal frameworks.

You are willing to learn about a complicated, fast-moving area and apply reasoning skills to challenging legal and factual scenarios. You are seeking high-quality and technical legal work (beyond what may typically be available for your level of experience) in a professional environment that seeks to surpass the standards of the best corporate and plaintiff firms in Australia.

Excellent communication and relationship skills are required. Professionalism, friendliness and a healthy work ethic are highly valued. You will be efficient, effective and have a collaborative working style suited to a small, dynamic, cheerful and supportive team.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Completed tertiary legal qualification, and Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice or equivalent (as is required for practice).
  • Admission to the Supreme Court of New South Wales or equivalent Court in another state or territory (and valid practising certificate).

DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 2 years post-admission litigation experience and substantial experience in complex litigation advisory or litigation experience in corporate and finance law, trustee law, environmental law and government law.
  • Good understanding of civil procedure.
  • An understanding of advanced scientific, economic and risk management concepts.
  • Experience dealing with experts, evidence and barristers throughout the litigation process.
  • Ability to read and understand financial statements.
  • A roll-your-sleeves-up attitude to drive the litigation process.
  • Excellent attention to detail and an ability to build supportive client relationships.

If you meet some (but not all) of the criteria for this position but you are interested in the role - we would welcome your application.
