Elder Rights Australia (ERA)

Work from Home Role – Eastern Melbourne Based

This is a work-from-home position; however, applicants must be based in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs as the role involves servicing clients within this region.

Fixed-Term, Full-Time, Monday – Friday. 8.30am – 4.30pm

We acknowledge the traditional owners of the lands on which we work and recognise that it always has been and always will be Aboriginal land. We pay our respects to all Elders, past and present.

Who We Are

ERA is a trusted, community-focused organisation supporting older people, their families and representatives across Victoria. We assist individuals in navigating the Commonwealth-funded aged care system through free, confidential and independent advocacy services.

As a founding member of the national Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN), we proudly deliver the National Aged Care Advocacy Program (NACAP) and the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS).

We are deeply committed to ensuring that the voices of older people — including Aboriginal communities, those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, LGBTIQ+ communities and people with disabilities, are heard, respected, and empowered. Our focus is on providing culturally appropriate information and advocacy that supports older people to make informed choices about the care and services they receive.

ERA operates as a fully remote organisation, with staff working from home and supported with OH&S compliant setups. We come together in person in Melbourne CBD approximately every six-eight weeks. This flexible work model, developed in response to staff preferences post COVID, supports accessibility, inclusion and work-life balance, while enabling us to deliver high-quality services across Victoria.

Our Values

Our work is grounded in the core values of Respect, Empowerment, Integrity, Inclusiveness, and Excellence. These values guide how we work with older people, our partners and each other.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a passionate and values-driven individual to join our growing team as a contracted Aged Care Advocate, based in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs. This is a fixed-term contract position, concluding on 12 July 2028.

In this vital role, you will uphold and advocate for the rights of older people, empowering them to make informed choices and have their voices heard. Through the provision of respectful information, education, advice, and advocacy, you will support older Victorians—particularly those experiencing vulnerability or marginalisation—to navigate the aged care system.

You will also play an important role in delivering community education and information sessions, helping build awareness of aged care rights across diverse communities throughout Victoria.

About the Role

This is primarily a work-from-home position, with regular travel required within Melbourne’s inner metro suburbs to engage with clients and aged care providers. Occasional travel to other metropolitan or regional locations may be required.

You’ll receive a comprehensive and structured onboarding program, tailored to equip you with the tools, support, and guidance needed to succeed in your role as an Advocate.

As an Advocate, you will:

  • Provide culturally safe, rights-based advocacy, information, elder abuse support, and care referrals to older people and their representatives in alignment with aged care principles.
  • Deliver individual advocacy support by participating in case meetings with relevant stakeholders to help resolve issues or complaints, always centring the preferences and self-determination of the older person.
  • Undertake rostered shifts on ERA’s state-wide telephone intake service, providing respectful and accessible support to people from diverse communities.
  • Assist clients to access relevant service and supports, enabling informed decision-making and confidence in navigating the aged care system.
  • Facilitate inclusive and accessible education sessions for a wide range of stakeholders, including aged care residents, home care recipients, carers, service providers, and community organisations.
  • Represent ERA at local community events, seniors’ expos, education forums, and information sessions to raise awareness of advocacy services and aged care rights.
  • Engage in culturally respectful outreach to raise visibility and understanding of ERA’s work within the aged care sector and the broader community.
  • Support ongoing efforts to improve equity, inclusion, and access through collaboration with community networks and key stakeholders.

What We’re Looking For:

You are an empathetic and motivated communicator, driven by a strong sense of social justice and a commitment to supporting older people. You bring professionalism, cultural humility, and compassion to every interaction. Whether you come from aged care, health, community, or advocacy sectors, your focus is on listening, empowering, and building trust.

You will bring:

  • A genuine passion for advocacy and empowering older people to uphold their rights.
  • The ability to communicate clearly, respectfully, and with cultural sensitivity and integrity.
  • Experience working in advocacy, community engagement, education, or person-centred support.
  • A demonstrated commitment to human rights, equity, and the inclusion of diverse communities.
  • Experience working alongside individuals from marginalised or underrepresented groups.
  • Understanding of the aged care system (residential and home care), or a willingness to learn.
  • Experience supporting people with complex needs or navigating challenging service systems.
  • Skills in planning, delivering, and evaluating community information sessions.
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively in a remote team environment.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities with flexibility.
  • A positive, proactive, and inclusive approach to your work and relationships.
  • Willingness to undergo a National Police Check (support will be provided if required).
  • Current knowledge of the aged care system and reforms is highly regarded.

The successful applicant will be required to hold a current National Police Check and Vulnerable Persons Check.
