Eastern Community Legal Centre provides free legal assistance, information, referral and community education, and undertakes primary prevention activities and strategic advocacy to change systems, structures and practices.

About the role

As a key member of the People and Shared Services team, the People Adviser provides generalist advice, support and improves processes and systems, across the entire employee lifecycle. This includes, but is not limited to; recruitment and selection, induction, performance management, employee contract management, learning and development and providing advice in relation to our Enterprise Agreement, policies and procedures.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide timely and accurate advice regarding HR policy, procedures, employment legislation, and talent acquisition
  • Recruit, onboard and offboard employees
  • Development of employee contracts, both at recruitment/offer and contract amendments, utilising the organisation’s HRIS data base
  • Develop and maintain highly effective stakeholder relationships with people leaders and staff, establishing a reputation for being a trusted adviser
  • Co-ordinate the organisation performance management framework
  • Provide leaders and managers with compliant and practical Employee Relations advice and support
  • Oversee the recruitment, engagement and management of volunteers and volunteer programs at ECLC, including on-boarding and training 

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Human Resources Management, industrial/employment law, or relevant discipline, with at least 4 years’ experience (preferably within the community or community legal sector)
  • Demonstrated understanding of key human resource functions across the employee life cycle, including recruitment and selection, induction, performance management, and learning and development  
  • Experience in advising and supporting managers in the resolution of complex people issues, with a working knowledge of employment law and the ability to apply it practically to workplace situations
  • Demonstrated experience in the creation and implementation of compliant, contemporary and best practice Human Resources and Safety & Wellbeing policies and practices, with a keen eye for detail
  • Knowledge in the interpretation and application of modern awards, in particular the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services (SCHADS) Industry Award, and enterprise agreements
  • Experience in utilising HRIS platforms, with a moderate understanding of payroll concepts and a proven ability in analysing and investigating payroll and entitlement issues 
  • Experience in the engagement and management of volunteers and volunteer programs within a community sector environment
  • Ability to self-direct and manage conflicting priorities, with effective time management skills High level communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to engage and maintain productive working relationships with a diverse range of people
  • Ability to take a leading role in maintaining a positive, strong workplace culture
  • Ability to handle sensitive issues, exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality
  • Strong person-centred approach
