Mensline Counsellor & Court Support

We are currently seeking flexible, friendly and motivated staff to join our team and fill a number of shifts across the roster including both Court Support Work and Phone Counselling shifts.

Your New Role

The role of the Mensline Counsellor is to provide crisis counselling support to both aggrieved and respondent males. The position will have you providing information and referrals; liaising with service providers and making professional risk assessments that maximise the safety of clients, partners, children and families as well as assessment of the caller's needs, which is delivered with a non-judgmental and client centered approach.

We currently have positions available where potential candidates could work across both counselling shifts and/or court support work. The court support role will require you to attend Magistrate's Court to provide court support to respondents and at times aggrieved males, who are appearing in court where an application has been made for a DFV protection order. DVConnect currently works in 5 courts across the Brisbane and Ipswich area.

What you need to Succeed

  • Tertiary qualifications in Psychology or Social Work or other similar qualification(s) that DVConnect considers suitable.
  • Experience in the provision of professional counselling, advocacy, and related crisis work for men, preferably in the area of domestic violence
  • Experience in assessing indicators of whether the caller is a person who uses violence or one who is subjected to violence in his personal relationship, and demonstrated ability to respond appropriately to this assessment
  • Demonstrates understanding of and commitment to working from a strong gendered analysis of domestic and family violence
  • A clear understanding of how cultural difference can be addressed to maximise the appropriateness of any assistance provided
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Domestic and Family Violence Act 2012, Domestic Violence Orders and Child Protection Act 1999 (or ability to rapidly acquire)
  • Desirable to have had court experience or ability to work in a court environment
  • Advantageous if you have experience in working within the domestic violence intervention sector, and working collaboratively with other domestic violence advocates
  • Well-developed oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Highly developed organisational skills including the ability to manage time effectively, the ability to prioritise tasks, and demonstrated attention to detail
  • Sound IT and typing skills and experience working with a variety of databases and telephony system
  • Flexible, friendly, positive and can work as a collaborative team member or autonomously
  • Flexibility to work day/evening and weekend shifts on a fortnightly roster
  • Current positive notice (blue card) or capacity to obtain
  • National Police Check
  • Right to Work in Australia
