Non-Executive Director - Board Member (Voluntary)

Dry July Foundation

About Us

The Dry July Foundation is an Australian registered charity that runs the annual Dry July campaign, dedicated to improving the comfort, care and wellbeing of people affected by cancer by funding practical, tangible support services for patients, families and carers across the country.

The flagship Dry July event is a nationwide fundraising challenge that encourages participants to go alcohol-free for the month of July while raising donations from their networks, with funds directed to cancer support organisations and projects such as specialist nurses, transport to treatment, accommodation and wellness programs; since launching in 2008, the campaign has engaged hundreds of thousands of participants and raised over $100 million to support more than 80 cancer organisations and 1,200 projects across Australia.

The Opportunity

We are seeking values-aligned, experienced professionals to join our Board on a voluntary basis. This is an opportunity to contribute your expertise where it has tangible, human impact and help shape the governance, sustainability, and growth of a charity delivering meaningful support to those who need it most.

We are particularly interested in individuals with backgrounds in:

  • Legal (governance, charity law, risk, contracts)
  • Compliance & Risk (regulatory frameworks, governance systems, audit)
  • Finance & Accounting (financial oversight, reporting, strategy)

Key Responsibilities

As a Board Member, you will:

  • Provide strategic guidance and oversight to ensure the organisation remains effective, sustainable, and compliant
  • Contribute to sound governance, risk management, and financial stewardship
  • Support and challenge the executive team constructively
  • Advocate for the organisation and expand its network, reach, and impact
  • Participate in board meetings and contribute ad hoc time and skills to support our small team

Who We’re Looking For

You are someone who:

  • Is motivated by purpose and community impact, not remuneration
  • Brings deep professional expertise in your field
  • Thinks strategically and exercises sound judgement
  • Is comfortable contributing in a collaborative, respectful board environment
  • Has the time and commitment to actively participate

Prior board experience is welcome but not essential. What matters most is your willingness to engage and contribute.

Commitment

  • Monthly board meetings (with occasional additional sessions)
    • Board members contribute approximately 2-3 hours per month for board meetings and digesting meeting papers
  • Annual strategy session (a working day)
  • Participation in subcommittees aligned to your expertise
  • Preparation and engagement outside of meetings as required

Why Join Us

This is a chance to apply your professional skills in a way that directly improves people’s lives. You’ll be part of a committed, values-led group working to build something that genuinely matters. We are looking to build a board that will take the Dry July Foundation to the next level.
