Position Description 

The Resource Officer will support the development, co-design, delivery and promotion of accessible health resources and outreach activities for people with intellectual disability, families and supporters on the Resources for People with Intellectual Disability, Families and Supporters program.  

The Resources for People with Intellectual Disability, Families and Supporters Program is a new project commencing in July 2026, as part of the National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health (The Centre). The program aims to co-design health resources for people with intellectual disability, their families and supports that address current unmet needs. The program also seeks to ensure that these resources are shared through a variety of formats, partners and communications channels so they reach those that need them.  

The National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health is a major initiative supported by the Australian Government, Department of Health, Disability and Aged Care, which commenced in 2023. The Centre is led by UNSW Sydney (Medicine and Health) together with a consortium which includes Down Syndrome Australia. The Centre’s purpose is to improve the health of people with Intellectual Disability.  

The role will work closely with people with intellectual disability, families, consortium partners and subject matter experts to identify resource gaps, develop new resources and coordinate outreach activities including workshops, webinars and information sessions. 

The Resource Officer will contribute to making the Centre a trusted source of health information for people with intellectual disability and families. 

The role reports directly to the Project Lead.   

Position Responsibilities  

Resource Development 

  • Coordinate the curation, development, review and updating of accessible health resources. 
  • Support the identification of priority topics and resource gaps.  
  • Liaise with subject matter experts, consortium partners, Family and Supporter Advisory Group, and other stakeholders during resource development.  
  • Coordinate accessibility requirements including Easy Read, plain language and other accessible formats.  
  • Support the commissioning of external resource development where required.

Co-design and Consultation 

  • Facilitate co-design activities with people with intellectual disability, their families and supporters.  
  • Coordinate feedback and testing of resources.  
  • Document stakeholder input and ensure feedback is incorporated into resource development.  

Outreach and Education 

  • Coordinate delivery of workshops, webinars and information sessions.  
  • Support development of learning materials and presentations.  
  • Assist with planning and facilitation of outreach activities.  
  • Support evaluation of workshops and educational activities.  

Promotion and Engagement 

  • Work with communications and engagement teams to promote resources.  
  • Liaise with partner organisations and other stakeholders to support dissemination of resources.  
  • Assist with monitoring resource downloads, reach and engagement.  

Administration and Reporting 

  • Maintain project documentation and records.  
  • Assist with reporting and evaluation activities.  
  • Prepare summaries of resource usage and feedback.

Selection Criteria - Skills, Knowledge and Experience 

Essential 

  • Relevant qualifications and/or experience in disability, health promotion, community development, education or similar fields.  
  • Demonstrated experience developing or coordinating resources, training or educational materials.  
  • Strong written communication skills.  
  • Experience working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders.  
  • Strong organisational and project coordination skills.  
  • Experience with Easy Read resources.  
  • Understanding of accessible communication principles.  
  • Experience facilitating workshops or community engagement activities.  
  • Commitment to inclusion of people with disabilities.  

Desirable 

  • Experience working within a national consortium or partnership model.  
  • Experience working in a not-for-profit environment. 

Work Environment 

The Down Syndrome Australia staff work as a virtual team. This position may be based in an office or home environment. The nature of this role and its responsibilities deems that occasionally some work will be required outside normal business hours and some travel will be required.  

Acceptance of the position involves a willingness to work within the philosophies and policy directions of Down Syndrome Australia. The successful applicant will be required to undergo satisfactory preemployment checks including professional referees, completion of a satisfactory police records check and working with children check. The successful applicant will initially be employed for a probationary period of three months.
