About Deaf Children Australia

Deaf Children Australia is a national organisation dedicated to supporting Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) children, young people, their families and the wider DHH community. We exist to ensure that no family navigates the journey alone. Grounded in lived experience, leadership and strong governance, we provide connection, mentoring, community, and transition support at the moments that matter most.

About You

We are seeking applicants with lived experience as a carer of a DHH child to join the Board. Previous board experience is desirable.

You will be motivated by DCA’s purpose and committed to improving outcomes for DHH children, young people, their families and the wider DHH community.

A suitable candidate will demonstrate:

  • A respectful and collaborative approach with empathy as a core value
  • A willingness to share observations, insights, and recommendations to support strong governance
  • Active listening and clear communication with an ability to contribute confidently to board discussions and decision-making.

About the Role

The DCA board is seeking expressions of interest from individuals who are keen to champion our mission and make a meaningful contribution.

The board governs the organisation and provides strategic direction, with a strong commitment to integrity, professionalism, and continuous improvement. The primary responsibilities of the board are to:

  • Shape and endorse strategic priorities
  • Provide governance, risk, and compliance oversight
  • Support and monitor delivery against the strategic plan
  • Endorse key commercial and strategic decisions
  • Review and monitor financial performance to support DCA’s long-term sustainability

Directors meet monthly in accordance with a preset schedule of board and sub-committee meetings. DCA welcomes applicants whose skills and experience will add to the DCA board’s diversity of perspectives and strengthen decision-making and governance.

Child Safety and Screening

DCA is a child-safe organisation and takes the safety and well-being of children seriously. Prior to commencement, directors are required to complete relevant screening checks, which include:

  • Working with Children Check
  • NDIS Worker Screening Check
  • Police Check
  • International Police Check (if you have lived or worked overseas in the past 10 years)

Diversity and Inclusion

DCA is an equal opportunity organisation that is inclusive and welcoming to all. We encourage applications from people of all backgrounds and especially welcome applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
