Darebin is situated on the Traditional Owner lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people. It is home to many Aboriginal community-controlled organisations, and a large number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples work, live and play within the municipality.

Darebin is also home to one of the most diverse communities in Victoria in terms of culture, language (more than 118 languages are spoken), ethnicity, faith and beliefs, gender, age, ability, sexuality, gender identity, class, socio-economic status, income, education level, occupation and caring responsibility.

Council responds to the many needs of the Darebin community, notably First Nations residents and organisations.

The purpose of the City Design team is to design and plan the future of our open spaces and public places to be thriving and resilient so all communities can flourish. We seek to enable sustainable change and promote excellence in design through understanding place and history, community needs and urban trends, and be inspired by and connected to Indigenous cultures, community and the land.

About the Role

Bring your experience in understanding the land, connections to Indigenous cultures, community and history and design tools to assist in master planning, playspace design and streetscape improvements throughout the City of Darebin. Share your knowledge and skills across the organisation, working closely with a number of different departments on designing, delivering and maintaining amazing spaces.

Duties

  • Design, consult and deliver landscapes within the public realm of the City of Darebin inclusive of open spaces, playspaces, activity precincts, streetscapes and other key urban areas
  • Provide specialist Indigenous culture, community, land and history advice on landscape and urban designs and review documentation presented to Council prepared by others
  • Assist in the implementation of capital works projects, from a design perspective
  • Promote and develop an understanding of urban design, landscape and environmental issues both within Council and the wider community

Skills & Experience

  • Knowledge of Urban Design and/or Landscape Architecture theory and practice
  • Understanding of project management skills, including the ability to coordinate multi-disciplinary projects with minimal supervision
  • Proven ability to manage multiple complex stakeholder relationships
