This role is based in Hobart either full-time or part-time for the right candidate. Flexible work arrangements are available and encouraged, including a 9 day fortnight/working from home.

ABOUT CPSU

The Community Public Sector Union is a member-led union whose purpose is to protect and improve public services for all Tasmanians and the working lives of those who deliver them.

CPSU is the oldest and most established union for Tasmania’s public sector employees.

Our Members

CPSU members work in the Tasmanian public sector, health and community care, justice and corrections, education and universities, as well as Government owned and managed enterprises.

Ideally the candidate will have experience working with shift workers in both operational and custodial settings.

You’ll be part of a passionate, close-knit group of around 15 staff who share a commitment to union values, solidarity and social justice. We work hard, we collaborate, and we celebrate wins together.

Position Purpose

The Senior Organiser is responsible for recruiting members, developing workplace leaders, and coordinating campaigns that build collective strength and achieve industrial and social outcomes for CPSU members. You will help shape our strategic organising approach and ensure campaigns are member-driven, collaborative and impactful.

Key activities include:

  • Recruit members and develop workplace leaders.
  • Plan and coordinate campaigns that grow membership and achieve industrial outcomes
  • Foster leadership among members and activists across diverse workplaces
  • Provide expert industrial advice and representation to members, including handling grievances, disputes, and negotiations.
  • Prepare and present cases before the Tasmanian Industrial Commission, including drafting applications, gathering evidence, and advocating for members in hearings and conferences.
  • Support the implementation of CPSU’s strategic plan and contribute to ongoing organisational development
  • Promote union values and build member confidence in collective action

selection criteria

Essential Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in a union or organising environment, or the readiness to step into a senior role
  • Proven ability to recruit, motivate and develop workplace leaders
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and engage others
  • Sound understanding of industrial relations and workplace rights
  • Competency with digital tools (Microsoft 365, CRM databases, social media and online organising platforms)
  • A deep commitment to trade union principles and the belief that workers, united, can create change

Desirable Requirements:

  • Knowledge of the Tasmanian State Service and Tasmanian industrial relations jurisdiction
  • Experience in strategy development and campaign coordination

REMUNERATION

An attractive remuneration package will be offered to the successful applicant, which will include:

  • Salary commensurate with demonstrated skills and experience
  • 35 hour week
  • 6 weeks leave, plus all the union won conditions you would expect; 18 weeks paid parental leave, Personal Leave, Purchased Leave, Study Leave and some you wouldn’t expect like Birthday Leave and Christmas Shutdown leave.
