We’re looking for a creative, organised and values-driven Communications Officer to help tell the stories of public sector workers and the importance of public services to the Tasmanian community.  

This is a role for a communications professional who understands the power of clear, timely and engaging messaging. You will help develop and deliver communications and marketing strategies across digital, print, social media and traditional media channels, supporting campaigns that build member power and promote the value of collective action.

This is a 12 month fixed term position,  based in Hobart, Tasmania, with some intrastate travel required.  At times, there will be a requirement to work outside of ordinary working hours to deliver projects, and flexible work arrangements are available.

The Community and Public Sector Union is a member-led organisation dedicated to protecting and improving public services for all Tasmanians and defending the working lives of those who deliver them. As the oldest and most established union representing Tasmania’s public sector employees, we’re proud of our long tradition of standing up for fairness, equity and respect at work.

The Communications Officer will help capture and share the stories, issues and wins of members working across public sector workplaces through content creation and digital campaigning.

CPSU members work in a diverse range of occupations for the Tasmanian Public Sector, including State Government Departments and Government owned and managed enterprises.

CPSU members work in Child Protection, Schools, Libraries, Corrections, Land Management, Parliament, Policy and much more. It is a cliché but diversity really is our strength.

Position Purpose

The Communications Officer is responsible for developing and implementing communications and marketing strategies that connect CPSU members, and workers yet to join, with their union. The role supports organising, campaigning, media engagement and member communications through strong written content, digital publishing, social media management, design, storytelling and communications planning. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop engaging written content for CPSU publications, campaigns and digital platforms.
  • Capture and share member stories through interviews, photography, video and written content.
  • Edit and proofread materials developed by staff and members prior to distribution with a high level of attention-to-detail.
  • Develop and publish timely member communications using email management systems.
  • Develop and implement marketing plans to increase brand recognition and support membership growth, including digital advertising.
  • Manage CPSU social media platforms, including creating, scheduling and moderating content.
  • Media monitoring for stories of interest to members and the organisation.
  • Prepare media releases, alerts and opinion pieces to further union objectives.
  • Develop original design concepts for posters, campaign materials, membership materials, stationery and promotions.
  • Work with staff to develop campaign slogans, logos and messaging.
  • Produce publication-quality proofs, obtain quotes and liaise with suppliers.
  • Maintain and adhere to the CPSU style guide across printed and digital materials.
  • Maintain an accessible archive of union materials, including photographs, video, audio, publications and resources.

selection criteria - Essential:

  • A strong commitment to capturing and sharing the stories of union members.
  • Capacity to deliver quality, engaging written material for use in campaigns, publications and member communications.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to liaise with team members on content, quality and opportunities for improvement.
  • Demonstrated success maintaining and growing social media assets.
  • Experience designing and purchasing targeted online advertisements.
  • Strong initiative, analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to file and archive content for the long-term benefit of the union.
  • Commitment to the Australian union movement and progressive values.
  • A current full driver’s licence.

Desirable:

  •  Relevant qualifications in social media, communications, journalism, marketing or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of skills, knowledge and training.
  • Experience working in a union, community development, membership-based, not-for-profit or government organisation.

Working Environment:

  • The role is based in Hobart and may require intrastate or interstate travel.
  • The role requires drive, initiative and a willingness to work outside normal working hours where required.

remuneraton:

  • Classification: CPSU Level 4 (salary range of $87,000-$92,500)
  • Location: Hobart
  • 12 month fixed-term role.
  • Flexible work arrangements are available.
