The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) has a long history of providing justice for the people of Victoria in metropolitan and regional courts across the state. The MCV determines in excess of 200,000 cases per annum at 51 venues, dealing with over 90 percent of all adult cases that come before Victorian courts each year. MCV aims to be an innovative, accessible and responsive court that provides quality services to the Victorian community.

About the Role

Make a meaningful impact in the courts' response to family violence.

The Family Violence Respondent Practitioner (FVRP) plays a critical role in the courts' response to family violence. As a specialist in this area, you will work within the Magistrates' Court of Victoria's family violence jurisdiction, alongside the Family Violence Registrar (FVR) and Family Violence Applicant Practitioner (FVAP). Together, this multidisciplinary team is focused on enhancing the safety of women and children attending court, while holding those who use family violence accountable for their actions.

You'll work directly with respondents, apply your expertise in family violence risk and behaviour change, and collaborate with court staff, police, legal professionals, and community services to drive safer outcomes.

As an FVRP, you will:

  • Conduct court-ordered risk assessments and connect respondents to appropriate support services, programs, and interventions
  • Promote accountability and behaviour change while managing risk of further harm
  • Provide expert advice and information to Magistrates regarding respondents and available services
  • Work closely with court stakeholders and external agencies to coordinate safe, effective referrals
  • Maintain accurate, confidential records and contribute to reporting and continuous service improvement
  • Build strong partnerships with community services to enhance support pathways
  • Support service delivery across courts, including travel as required

This is a public-facing, on-site role within a dynamic court environment.

About You

You are an experienced practitioner who:

  • Has strong experience in family violence risk assessment (MARAM-aligned) and safety planning
  • Brings skills in crisis support, case coordination, and working with complex needs
  • Understands relevant legislation and frameworks, including the Family Violence Protection Act 2008
  • Communicates clearly and builds effective working relationships across stakeholders
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in social work, psychology, social sciences, criminal justice, or other related field is highly desirable,
  • Demonstrated experience working with people who use family violence in complex settings
