Peer Advisor - Municipal Public Health Planning (Voluntary)

  • Are you interested in public health* matters that affect older people in their local communities?
  • Do you have some insights into what kinds of local health improvement opportunities older people would like to see prioritised?
  • Would you like to help improve the way councils identify and address ageing issues in their public health and wellbeing plans?
  • Could you spare time in early 2024 to participate in a series of small group discussions to generate advice for councils (some background reading and wider networking may be required)?

*By “public health” we mean action to improve health outcomes of the whole community through creating environments, social connections and services that promote good mental and physical health and protect against health risks. It is not primarily focused on the delivery of medical services.

Position Objective

As part of a small group of peer advisers to:

  • generate insights and advice about the kinds of local public health issues older Victorians see as important and effective ways for councils to engage with older residents about these issues; and
  • to contribute to the guidance provided to local councils in developing their next round of Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plans.

Hours required

The estimated volunteer engagement hours are 6-8 hours face to face in a small group workshop format plus up to 10-12 hours background reading and peer consultation over the period February – June 2024.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake brief background reading (to be provided) including a selection of current local council health plans;
  • Participate in a short project induction session (online);
  • Participate in Workshop 1: Identification of effective ways to engage older people in local public health planning;
  • Undertake own consultation with peers or existing groups on public health concerns;
  • Participate in Workshop 2: Definition of potential public health priorities for older people;
  • Provide feedback online or verbally on draft project outputs
  • Optional participation in workshop for Council planners.
