About CHoB

Compassionate Hearts on the Bellarine offers free support for people with life-limiting illnesses, as well as their families and carers. Our trained volunteers provide emotional and practical assistance, complementing the palliative care delivered by healthcare professionals, to help people live well within their community through to the end of their lives.

Purpose of the Role

Our volunteers are the heartbeat of CHoB. The Head of HR & Volunteering sits on the General Committee and is the primary advocate for the people who make our mission possible — ensuring CHoB attracts, supports and retains the compassionate, skilled volunteers who change lives every day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the General Committee
    • Attend monthly General Committee meetings as the lead voice on people and culture matters
    • Contribute to broader organisational governance and decision-making alongside fellow committee members
    • Develop succession plan for General Committee and Subcommittees based on skills matrix
  • Chair the HR Subcommittee
    • Lead and facilitate the HR Subcommittee, setting the agenda and ensuring decisions are well-informed and followed through
    • Report subcommittee outcomes and recommendations to the General Committee
  • HR Policies & Legislative Compliance
    • Maintain and regularly review CHoB's HR and volunteer policies to ensure they reflect best practice
    • Monitor changes to relevant legislation and update policies accordingly to keep CHoB compliant and well-governed
    • Oversee risk management related to HR and volunteers
  • Hiring of Volunteers & Committee Members
    • Oversee the recruitment, induction and onboarding processes for volunteers and committee members
    • Ensure all role descriptions are current, appropriate and clearly understood
    • Advise on the qualifications and experience required for CHoB roles
  • Community Networking & Volunteer Sourcing
    • Actively network within relevant professional and community circles to raise awareness of volunteer opportunities at CHoB
    • Build relationships with organisations, networks and communities that can help CHoB find and attract the right people

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • Experience in a senior leadership, HR, or executive committee role
  • Understanding of HR principles, volunteer management or community services
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build consensus
  • Reliable, organised, and committed to CHoB's values

Desirable

  • Experience in the not-for-profit or community sector
  • Familiarity with governance and volunteer management legislation
  • Active networks relevant to sourcing community volunteers
