The Community and City Services Division puts people, families and community at the forefront of our work. The Social Worker works within the Family Services Team of the Community Wellbeing Branch, within the Community and City Services Division. The Family Services Team of the Community Wellbeing Branch which is made up of three main work areas – Family Health (including Maternal and Child Health and Immunisation), Parenting Services and Family Support and Counselling. These teams work together in an integrated model to deliver high quality, responsive services to the community.

The Social Worker provides assessment, casework and case management services and works in partnership with community agencies and groups to develop strategies to engage marginalised families. The Family Support and Counselling program comprises the coordinator, Senior Social Workers, Social Worker, bi-lingual Family Support Workers, and Casework/Counsellors.

As part of the Family Wellbeing Team, the Social Worker provides a range of individual and group services to families with children 0 to 18 years, from various language, cultural and socio-economic groups, to strengthen families and improve circumstances for children. The Social Worker makes decisions on the day to day management of their work tasks referring to existing legislation, policies, procedures, practice standards and agreed case plans.

Selection Criteria

All CoM employees will demonstrate an ability to articulate and demonstrate benefits of positive culture and City of Melbourne’s iCare values – Integrity, Courage, Accountability, Respect and Excellence

• Bachelor of Social Work or Master of Social Work recognised by AASW or equivalent qualifications
• Demonstrate an awareness and knowledge of and adhere to all legislative requirements pertaining to the position. The Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005, Children, Youth and Families Act, 2005 and Child Safe Standards
• Knowledge of relevant theoretical frameworks for working with families, knowledge of child development and demonstrated skills in assessment, case management and a range of family intervention models
• Demonstrated skills in culturally competent practice
• Commitment to the principles of an integrated team model of service delivery, demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team;
• Interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to work effectively with the diversity of cultural, socioeconomic, language LGBTIQ+ community and neuro-diverse groups from which service users, the community and staff may come
• Case work and case management skills and ability to manage a caseload of vulnerable families, children and adolescents with complex needs
• Skills to engage and build collaborative working relationships within the organisation and external organisations; and Computer literacy.

The Social Worker will also ideally possess

• A relevant community language.
• Experience working within Child and Family Services or Child Protection
• Experience in delivering support services to culturally diverse groups and children.
  Experience with interpreters.
• Group work experience and designing and facilitating parent support groups.
