The Support Worker role is an exciting opportunity for those with a strong desire to see people with intellectual disability get the support they need to thrive in their home and their community. The aim is not to merely run a house but to provide a home. There is currently one resident in her new home with the aim of having two other female housemates join her soon. The first resident has high support needs and requires at least 1-1 assistance with all communication and daily activities. We have multiple casual positions available and as the house will have all female residents it is preferable that the staff also be female. Charis House has an inclusive Christian ethos, we welcome diversity.

As Charis House is relatively new, this is a unique opportunity where you can contribute to the establishment of a caring culture where residents receive truly person-centred support in a Christian ethos. The families of the residents have an important role and can support staff as they seek to provide appropriate care. You will be valued as an important part of the Charis House community.

The Residential Support Worker will be responsible for:

  • Helping to create a safe and happy Christian home where everyone is safe, valued and as happy and healthy as possible
  • Supporting residents with all aspects of their daily lives and carrying out personal care duties e.g. getting dressed, transport, toileting & showering, eating, administering medication, emotional regulation, understanding environment
  • Maintaining client medical and behavioural records
  • Planning and implementing appropriate activities and community participation e.g. walking, cooking, music, grocery shopping
  • Implementing therapist and medical recommendations
  • Carrying out cleaning duties
  • Liaising regularly with clients’ families, house manager, day programs and community supports
  • Participating in team meetings and contributing to a collaborative and supportive environment
  • Maintaining safe work practices e.g. emergency evacuation drills, food labelling, medication administration systems
  • Adhering to systems and policies that ensure client safety and wellbeing
  • Following SILC policies, NDIS guidelines and support plans
  • Ensuring individualised, person-centred support is provided to each resident

Skills/attributes:

  • Affirm the Christian values of love, inclusion, grace and mercy
  • Preferably female as all housemates will be female
  • Display a creative and energetic approach to supporting clients to access the community and pursue individual interests and goals
  • Have a strong interest in client wellbeing, health and safety
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and individually
  • Willingness to accept overnight, sleepover, weekend and public holiday shifts
  • It is desirable (but not essential) to be available to work 30+ hours per week

Qualifications:

  • Valid and current driver's license (having your own car is desirable)
  • Current First Aid Certificate, or willingness to obtain
  • Valid Criminal Record Check or willingness to obtain
  • It is desirable (but not essential) that you have qualifications and/or experience working with people with intellectual disabilities
  • Induction and further training will be provided
