Community Disability Alliance Hunter (CDAH) is a peer support organisation, run for and by people with disability and their families. CDAH is the first Disabled Peoples Organisation established to prepare people for the National Disability Insurance Scheme. It is forging new directions and is guided by its vision of an inclusive and just society where people with disability have genuine voice, choice and control. CDAH’s work is driven by its Board which is made up of people with disability and family members.

The objectives of the Community Disability Alliance Hunter (CDAH) are to:

  • Increase the knowledge, skills and capacity of people with disability and their families through information, advice, mentoring, peer support, training and development;
  • Be a collective voice of, and for, people with disability and families;
  • Assist people with disability to make the most of their packages of support;
  • Build the capacity of the community to welcome all people;
  • Share our collective lived experience to empower people with disability to have voice, choice and control;
  • Uphold and be guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

About the role:

The Communications Officer will have strong skills in communications, promotion and networking. You will drive the communications strategy, create content to promote CDAH, and support the development and growth or people with disability to create content for CDAH’s community. You will attend community meetings, represent CDAH at relevant community steering committees & events. As this is an entry level position, you will be mentored to build your skills in this area, with support from CDAH management and external industry professionals.

Lead responsibilities

  • Manage & update CDAH website regularly
  • Manage regular posting on CDAH social media outputs
    • Facebook
    • Twitter
    • Instagram
    • Newsletter
  • Coordinate bringing in peers to create content for social media to grow
    the ‘voice and face’ of CDAH
  • Develop a ‘voice & face’ for CDAH commentary on content
  • working alongside other project team members to develop plans for coordination of promotion of CDAH’s projects
  • Communicating with members in the community

Selection criteria

The Communications Officer will have the following skills, experiences and/or qualifications:

  • Commitment to the human rights of people with disability and the principles of participation and inclusion (lived experience of disability, personally or as a family member will be highly regarded).
  • Sound knowledge and/or Experience of using Microsoft Office suite, Canva, Mailchimp, or any other programs.
  • Commitment to growing your skillset within the role
  • Experience working as a productive and respectful team member
    (experience working with a team in a capacity building role will be highly regarded)
  • Skills in building relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Good project management skills, including time management, project planning and reporting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Good computer skills
  • Excellent understanding of social media platforms
  • Willingness to be mentored by an industry professional
