Organisational Context

This role fits within the Cancer Information and Support Services Division, that aims to empower and support people affected by cancer, so that no-one need face cancer alone.

This Division assists people as they navigate the cancer journey, easing their emotional and practical burdens and helping them make informed decisions.

This critical position facilitates access to peer support and counselling for people affected by cancer, working across programs enabling multiple channels of delivery. These programs include:

  • Cancer Counselling = You will have the opportunity to provide direct support though professional counselling
  • Telephone Support Groups (TSG) = You will facilitate the TSGs, that offer group peer support and information to adults affected by cancer, including patients, their families and carers.
  • Cancer Connect Peer support = You will enable client access to this one-to-one peer support, which is provided by a trained volunteer who has experienced cancer
  • Cancer Council Online Community = You will review and moderate this online community for people affected by cancer, where anyone can participate in discussion forums, find support groups and share personal blogs.

Detail

This role will:

  • Provide evidenced based information on a range of cancer types to clients accessing 131120 information and support and referred to Cancer Peer Support and Counselling Programs
  • Refer clients to relevant support services and facilitate client access to professional counselling and/or peer support in accordance with program operating guidelines
  • Provision of individual and group psychosocial / therapeutic support via telephone, online or face to face engagement, across our peer support and counselling services
  • Deliver training for peer support volunteers and facilitators
  • Provide briefing and debriefing support to peer support volunteers and facilitators
  • Ensure data collection is accurate and in accordance with Cancer Council NSW privacy and confidentiality guidelines
  • In collaboration with program Managers and Coordinators, assist with program reporting as required
  • Contribute to the analysis of issues raised by peer support and counselling clients, and the peer support volunteers and facilitators, to inform program evaluation and improve service delivery within the Cancer Peer Support and Counselling programs and Cancer Council NSW
  • Provide program information and contribute to promotional activities, developing key health professional relationships to ensure program awareness and equity of access for people affected by cancer
  • Undertake development planning and training to continually improve knowledge and skills required to provide effective psychosocial support for people with cancer
  • Participate and contribute to the support and training of new Cancer Council staff
  • Contribute to overall effective operation and delivery of the Cancer Peer Support and Counselling Programs

You will also need:

  • Counselling or psychology tertiary qualifications or equivalent
  • Registration with a national peak body eg PACFA, APHRA essential
  • Experience providing individual and group therapeutic support via telephone, online or face to face
  • Knowledge of psychosocial support
  • Training / presentation skills and experience
  • Exceptional communication both verbal and written
  • Ability to adapt and tailor your approach, to the needs of those that require your assistance
  • Previous experience in supportive care of cancer patients and their carers will be looked on favourably
  • Ability to work Monday – Thursday (preferred but negotiable)
