    THE ROLE - An OPPORTUNITY to Make a difference 

    This is a full-time contract until 30 June 2027. Available for immediate start.   

    This role sits within Caxton's Public Law and Community Rights team and has a significant focus on coronial law and supporting families engaged in coronial investigations and inquests. The team also assists clients with human rights, anti-discrimination, administrative law and public law matters. 

    Reporting to the Managing Senior Lawyer – Public Law and Community Rights, you will provide legal advice, casework and representation to clients navigating some of the most complex and challenging experiences of their lives. You will work with families seeking answers following a reportable death, advocate for clients experiencing discrimination or breaches of their rights, and contribute to law reform and systems advocacy informed by the issues you see in practice. 

    This is a rare opportunity to develop specialist expertise in coronial law while working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment committed to advancing human rights and access to justice. 

    What makes this role unique 

    This is not a traditional litigation or generalist civil law role. It is an opportunity to undertake meaningful legal work that supports families, promotes accountability and contributes to systemic change. 

    In this role you will: 

    • Undertake substantial coronial casework, including supporting families through coronial investigations and inquests.
    • Develop specialist expertise in coronial law and practice within one of Queensland's leading community legal centres.
    • Work with families following deaths in custody, deaths involving public authorities and other matters raising significant public interest and accountability issues.
    • Assist clients with human rights, public law, anti-discrimination and administrative law matters, particularly where they intersect with issues of equality, accountability and access to justice.
    • Work collaboratively with social workers and other professionals to provide trauma-informed, culturally safe and client-centred services.
    • Contribute to law reform, community education and strategic advocacy informed by the experiences of clients and families.
    • Supervise and mentor junior lawyers, restricted practitioners, PLT students, volunteers and other staff assisting with Public Law and Community Rights matters.
    • This role is ideal for a lawyer who is intellectually curious, values social justice, and wants to support families seeking answers, accountability and meaningful participation in legal processes. 

    Remuneration and Benefits

    • Level 6.1 under the SCHADS Awards plus above award entitlements 
    • $130, 058.93 per annum (inclusive of superannuation), plus an additional allowance for Senior Lawyer role
    • 2 weeks Christmas shutdown leave in addition to 4 weeks annual leave 
    • First Nations staff entitled to a colonial loading payment of 4% on top of their base salary 
    • 35-hour week of work paid at 38-hour week rate (pro rata)  
    • Flexible work arrangements available 
    • 12.75% employer superannuation contribution

    Essential requirements  

    • Demonstrated experience across relevant areas of law
    • Demonstrated experience supervising lawyers on restricted practising certificates, PLT students and volunteers.   
    • Bachelor of Laws or similar with 5+ years post admission experience
    • Admitted in an appropriate Australian state jurisdiction, and in the High Court of Australia
    • Current, or eligibility for, Queensland Practising Certificate
