Caxton Community Legal Centre's purpose is to promote and protect human rights in Queensland through access to justice. Caxton provides free information, legal assistance, advocacy and social support in relation to a broad range of legal issues for people living in the Greater Brisbane Region and Statewide. Priority is given to people who experience disadvantage, trauma and marginalisation, and who have limited capability to self-advocate. Caxton undertakes community education, engages in law and systems reform and publishes legal information on a range of topics in the online Queensland Law Handbook. This is a full-time contract until 30 June 2027. Available for immediate start.
This role sits within Caxton's Public Law and Community Rights team and has a significant focus on coronial law and supporting families engaged in coronial investigations and inquests. The team also assists clients with human rights, anti-discrimination, administrative law and public law matters.
Reporting to the Managing Senior Lawyer – Public Law and Community Rights, you will provide legal advice, casework and representation to clients navigating some of the most complex and challenging experiences of their lives. You will work with families seeking answers following a reportable death, advocate for clients experiencing discrimination or breaches of their rights, and contribute to law reform and systems advocacy informed by the issues you see in practice.
This is a rare opportunity to develop specialist expertise in coronial law while working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment committed to advancing human rights and access to justice.
This is not a traditional litigation or generalist civil law role. It is an opportunity to undertake meaningful legal work that supports families, promotes accountability and contributes to systemic change.
