ABOUT CAXTON 

Caxton Community Legal Centre's purpose is to promote and protect human rights in Queensland through access to justice.  Caxton provides free information, legal assistance, advocacy and social support in relation to a broad range of legal issues for people living in the Greater Brisbane Region and Statewide.  Priority is given to people who experience disadvantage, trauma and marginalization, and who have limited capability to self-advocate. Caxton undertakes community education, engages in law and systems reform and publishes legal information on a range of topics in the online Queensland Law Handbook.  Find out more at www.caxton.org.au. 

THE ROLE - An OPPORTUNITY to Make a difference 

This is a full-time 12-months contract, role available for immediate start.  

This role works in a multidisciplinary team of lawyers and social workers and is responsible for providing legal advice and casework across the family law and domestic & family violence programs of Caxton, inclusive of rostered duty lawyer services in Brisbane and in regional areas, and representation at Family Dispute Resolution Conferences. The role also contributes to supervising volunteers, supervising student legal clinics (family law), supervising PLT students and secondees, delivering community legal education and contributing to law reform.

  • 35-hour week of work paid at 38-hour week rate (pro rata)

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Apply in-depth existing knowledge of family law and domestic and family violence law to deliver legal advice and casework within the family law and domestic violence programs, including as a rostered duty lawyer (approx. 2 days per week) and evening advice service coordinator (to be agreed)
  • Work collaboratively with social workers to provide holistic, client-centred services to diverse clients within a human rights framework
  • Deliver community education, engage in sector development and networking, contribute to law and policy reform
  • Provide supervision to restricted practitioners, PLT students, secondees and volunteers (level 6 role and not line management)

Essential requirements 

  • Demonstrated experience in family law and domestic and family violence law (5+ years for level 6 role)
  • Bachelor of Laws
  • Eligible for admission as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of Queensland
  • Current Unrestricted Practising Certificate
  • Ability to complete the Legal Aid Queensland domestic and family violence duty lawyer accreditation
