DESCRIPTION

The Solicitor works within Care Consumer Law under the supervision of the Principal Solicitor. The Solicitor is required to have a high level of communication, legal research, and technical skills.

The Solicitor provides legal information, advice, casework, and representation services to vulnerable clients in core areas of consumer law, including consumer credit law, Australian Consumer Law and fair trading, financial abuse, information services, and other areas within Care Consumer Law’s areas of expertise.

The Solicitor supports the work of Care Financial Counselling through provision of information or advice as needed. The Solicitor participates in community legal education, policy development, submission drafting, and stakeholder engagement activities.

The Solicitor requires admission as a Legal Practitioner in the Australian Capital Territory and must have at least a Restricted Practising Certificate issued by the ACT Law Society.

A Level 6 solicitor works with a greater degree of autonomy and supports the Principal Solicitor with supervision of other staff and volunteers.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential:

  • Qualified legal practitioner eligible to practice as a solicitor in the ACT, holding at least a Restricted Practicing Certificate in the ACT.
  • Legal practice experience, including providing advice to clients, undertaking casework, and representation in courts and tribunals.
  • Willingness and capacity to represent clients in ACAT and the Magistrate’s Court.
  • Awareness of and demonstrated skills in communicating with and advocating for disadvantaged and vulnerable client groups.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Capacity to work with a high degree of autonomy and accountability, demonstrating initiative, time management skills, and the capacity to prioritise tasks and manage deadlines.
  • (Level 6 only) Experience or ability supervising others.
  • Values consistent with Care’s mission and strategic direction, including a commitment to social justice and to assisting low income and vulnerable consumers to enforce their rights.

Desirable:

  • Experience in a community legal centre.
  • Knowledge of or experience in fair trading, trade practices, telecommunications, consumer credit and consumer protection policy, and ability to apply this knowledge in advising and advocating for clients.
  • Experience working with victim/survivors of domestic and family violence.
  • (Level 6 only) Possess an unrestricted practising certificate in the ACT.
