Care Consumer Law (CCL) is a program of Care Inc and an Australian Community Legal Centre. For over 30 years, CCL has been providing front line services to our community as well as helping to shape national and local policy and law reform through systemic advocacy. Care Inc has been the main provider of financial counselling, microfinance and financial capability building in the ACT since 1983. All our programs are free and independent.

THE ROLE

You will lead and drive our legal services working in partnership with other Principal Solicitors. You will manage a multi-disciplinary team to deliver legal advice and representation for people experiencing debt, credit and other consumer law problems, often arising from financial hardship and vulnerabilities. You will also shape the national and local advocacy work in consumer law, energy justice and financial rights.

You will work from a client centred approach and where appropriate, in close connection with Care Inc.’s financial counsellors and capability specialists to achieve sustainable outcomes. You will also support the work of Care Inc through provision of advice, training and through the development and participation in community education programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Laws Degree, with substantial experience (5+ post years).
  • Admission as a solicitor enabling you to practice as a solicitor in the Australian Capital Territory.
  • Hold, or be eligible to hold, an unrestricted practicing certificate enabling unsupervised legal practice in the Australian Capital Territory.

SKILLS REQUIRED.

  • Advanced postgraduate qualifications in law and experience at the management level in the legal or social and community services sector.
  • Exceptional skills in building and maintaining effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including government agencies, funding bodies, community groups, and other key partners.
  • Proven ability to advocate effectively for public interest issues and the organisation at a national or state level, including influencing policy development, participating in industry reforms, and at times representing the organisation in public and media engagements.
  • Sound knowledge and experience in providing high-quality legal advice and casework through a trauma-informed lens, including the ability to advocate, negotiate and liaise effectively on a client’s behalf in a non-judgmental manner.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage teams effectively, including fostering a positive organisational culture, mentoring staff and promoting professional development, and demonstrated ability to contribute to and implement policy and projects.
  • Experience in budget management and reporting accountability.
  • An understanding of Care Inc.’s values and objectives.
  • Hold a current WWVP and current and clear National Police Check (no more than twelve months old).
