Born With Attitude Pty Ltd provides 24hr supervision and other support as needed and operates on a ‘Participant-Owned Disability Service’ (PODS) model with families serving as members of the PODS and managing the service.

This is an existing NDIS service and requires staff with experience in personal care and household tasks.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Disability Support Worker is responsible to provide support by providing high quality care that supports the emotional, social and behavioural care needs of vulnerable client.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THIS ROLE

This is not a typical disability support worker position and is best suited to applicants who are confident, resilient and experienced working within complex support environments.

This role is not focused on community access only or “coffee outing” style shifts. The successful applicant must be comfortable supporting participants with complex behavioural presentations, emotional dysregulation, personal care needs and household cleaning responsibilities in a home environment.

Workers must be able to remain calm under pressure, follow behaviour support strategies and maintain professional boundaries while providing consistent, person-centred support.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES

  • Provide support care that delivers quality outcomes;

KEY RESULT AREAS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Personal Support

  • Contribute to the development of a safe and nurturing environment;
  • Carry out personal duties including assisting with showering, dressing, feeding, toileting, personal hygiene, transport, recreational activities, personal encouragement;
  • Contribute to the development, implementation and review of individual care plans that meet the emotional, social and behavioural needs of the participant;
  • Assist to develop independent living skills;
  • Protect and respect the rights of participant;
  • Safeguard the wellbeing of participant and report any concerns immediately;
  • Support participant to remain connected to the significant people and places in their lives;
  • Support participant to access information and experiences which assist them to develop a positive sense of identity;
  • Support participant to participate in decision making processes;
  • Provide services that are sensitive to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander; and LTBTQIA+ participant and their families.

Team Role

  • Provide support that reflects the organisation’s values, policies and practice frameworks including the Participant-owned disability service model;
  • Work collaboratively with other support staff, case workers, service providers and families;
  • Undertake rostered duties including sleepovers;
  • Carry out household duties including cleaning, shopping, meal preparation, minor property and grounds maintenance;
  • Participate in team meetings, house meetings, case conferences and case review meetings as required;
  • Maintain records and documentation as required [including case notes, communication books, incident reports, hazard and injury log etc];
  • Contribute to the implementation of client participation and feedback processes;
  • Ensure that sensitive client information is kept in a secure and confidential manner;
  • Comply with the organisation’s administrative and financial management procedures;

Professional

  • Participate in professional development opportunities as required;
  • Participate constructively in supervision and performance appraisals.
  • Participate in the development and review of policies and procedures;
  • Identify practice improvements that contribute to better outcomes for the participant;
  • Remain informed of developments in out of home care, and disability services;
  • Be available to undertake higher duties and/or secondment as required;
  • Undertake other duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

The successful applicant will have:

  • Drivers Licence
  • NDIS Screening Check
  • 100 points ID
  • NDIS Worker Orientation Module Certificate
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Working With Vulnerable People Check/ NDIS Clearance
  • References
  • Own vehicle

Applicants with the following will be highly regarded:

  • Providing personal care in a home environment;
  • Ability to relate to and work with people with physical, social, emotional difficulties, complex and challenging behaviour
  • Experience and understanding of OH&S issues in the workplace;
  • Good written and verbal communication skills;
  • Commitment to the purpose and values of Born With Attitude Pty Ltd;
  • Qualifications in disability work or relevant field, or suitable experience
  • Willingness to accept overnight, weekend and home support shifts

There is no single perfect answer. We are interested in how you think, prioritise safety and follow professional practice.

  • How do you adapt communication when someone is experiencing emotional dysregulation and cognitive impairment?
  • How do you respond when a client refuses support or becomes verbally aggressive?
  • If a client directed sexualised comments or behaviour toward you during a shift, how would you respond in the moment and what steps would you take afterward?
  • Describe a time you had to de-escalate a situation. What worked, what did not, what could have been done differently?
  • What is your process if you feel unsafe during a shift?
  • What strategies help you remain calm when a client is escalated?
  • This work can be slow and progress can be non linear. How do you measure success in a role like this?
