Senior Producer

Negotiable salary + 9.5% Superannuation (pro rata, 4/5 days per week) for successful applicant. The remuneration for this position will be based on level of experience. This is a 12 month contract with the potential to be extended depending on performance and fit within the team.

BlakDance is a national industry and producing organisation for First Nation contemporary dance. With a national mandate, BlakDance is based on Turrbal and Yuggera Country in Meanjin (Brisbane) at the Judith Wright Arts Centre.

We are a self-determined, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation and a trusted source of productive, culturally responsible partnerships. We are governed by a voluntary Board that ensures the organisation meets financial and governance responsibilities. The BlakDance Cultural Council ensures Indigenous cultural knowledge is part of our everyday business.

BlakDance is looking to appoint a Senior Producer to oversee the Producer Development Program, and to nurture and support the annual cohort of Emerging Producers and Associate Artists. The role includes building the producer development program; producer intensives, a program of industry mentorship, networking and professional development opportunities. The Senior Producer also oversees the BlakDance Residency Program, the Minjerribah Dance Lab and other BlakDance Lab’s and BlakDance Produced works of scale.

Ideal start date: May 2021

Term: 12 months, with a three-month probation period.

Preference will be given to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants but this role is open to all people with experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • An understanding of First Nations Australian Cultural Protocols
  • Demonstrated experience preferably in a senior producer role within performing arts
  • Demonstrated experience (over 5 years) in performing arts management which includes financial and project management
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring, leadership and managing of a small team
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • An understanding of contemporary dance in Australia and internationally

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Knowledge and connection to First Nations Australian contemporary dance
  • Knowledge and connection to First Nations Australian performing arts sector
  • Cultural competency and First Nations arts and cultural literacy
  • Knowledge of national and international performing arts industry
  • Ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines
  • Excellent administrative and organisational management skills
  • Considerable experience producing performing arts productions, presentations and tours, experience producing new work and/or international producing experience is preferred but not essential
  • Impeccable organisational and time management skills, displaying confidence and efficiency when working to tight and/or competing deadlines
  • Well-developed grant writing skills and an understanding of the performing arts landscape in Queensland and nationally
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to develop and manage strong relationships
  • Proven strong stakeholder management and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with artists and creative teams
  • Proven ability to mentor emerging producers direct reports in managing budgets and cost-saving mechanisms where required
  • Demonstrated ability to write successful grant and funding applications

DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Tertiary qualification in theatre, dance, entertainment or arts management or an equivalent relevant knowledge, training and/or experience
  • Effective use of online management tools and databases such as Asana, Slack. Airtable or similar online project management tools
  • Ability to adapt in flexible working environments
  • Experience in supporting team members through professional development and mentoring
  • Experience in grant writing, acquittals and evaluations
  • Computer efficiency – MS Office, G-Suite
  • A full open driver’s license preferred
  • Capacity to work after hours and travel
