Senior Behaviour Support Practitioner / Psychologist & Behaviour Support Practitioner

Billy Cart Behaviour

About Billy Cart Behaviour

We’re not your typical behaviour support provider. At Billy Cart Behaviour, we do things differently because people are different. We laugh loudly, support boldly and genuinely geek out over thoughtful clinical work that creates meaningful change. We are a neuro-affirming, trauma-informed and NDIS-registered organisation supporting people with disability, mental health needs, complex trauma and behaviours that may place themselves or others at risk. Our focus is always on understanding the whole person, strengthening quality of life and supporting people to live their most autonomous and least restrictive lives.

Our Canberra team works on Ngunnawal Country from our sensory-friendly office in Bruce, as well as within participants’ homes, schools, workplaces and community settings. We are currently looking for an experienced clinician to join our Canberra team in one of the following roles:

  • Senior Behaviour Support Practitioner
  • Psychologist & Behaviour Support Practitioner

The role can be shaped around your qualifications, experience, professional interests and preferred caseload.

Why You’ll Love Working With Us

  • Work in a way that works for you - Balance your time between our Canberra office, home, community visits and telehealth. We value flexibility while also making sure clinicians remain connected and supported.
  • Clinical work comes first - Our senior roles remain genuinely clinical. You can maintain direct participant work while contributing to mentoring, consultation, quality improvement or service development in areas that interest you.
  • Caseloads tailored to your strengths - You may be particularly interested in mental health, complex trauma, forensic disability, supported independent living, early intervention, neurodevelopmental disability, restrictive practice reduction or multidisciplinary assessment. We aim to build caseloads around practitioner capability and interest rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
  • Strong clinical support without micromanagement - You will have access to regular individual supervision, peer consultation, reflective practice groups and specialist clinical support. We want practitioners to feel trusted, but never left alone with difficult decisions.
  • No cookie-cutter plans - Our resources and templates are designed to support good clinical reasoning, not replace it. Practitioners have the autonomy to develop individualised assessments, formulations and intervention approaches.
  • Professional development that matters - We provide professional development funding, internal learning opportunities, access to experienced clinicians and opportunities to contribute to training, research, resources and broader sector projects.
  • Practical support included - You will have access to internal administration support, a streamlined CRM, a laptop, an iPhone and secure clinical systems.
  • A workplace with personality - Dogs, cats, fidget toys, creative thinking and strange lunchtime conversations are all very welcome.

ROLE: SENIOR BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT PRACTITIONER

This role is suited to an experienced Behaviour Support Practitioner who enjoys complex clinical work and wants to help strengthen the capability of other practitioners without necessarily moving into traditional people management. You will maintain an advanced clinical caseload while acting as a trusted source of guidance for colleagues. Leadership is demonstrated through influence, sound clinical judgement, mentoring and the ability to create space for thoughtful problem-solving rather than simply providing all the answers.

Your Role May Include

  • Completing comprehensive functional behaviour assessments.
  • Developing, reviewing and implementing Behaviour Support Plans.
  • Supporting participants with complex, high-risk or multi-system presentations.
  • Developing evidence-informed, neuro-affirming and trauma-informed interventions.
  • Supporting the reduction and elimination of restrictive practices wherever possible.
  • Providing consultation on complex assessment, formulation, risk and intervention matters.
  • Mentoring and coaching Behaviour Support Practitioners.
  • Supporting colleagues to strengthen their clinical reasoning and independent decision-making.
  • Reviewing clinical reports and plans and providing constructive feedback.
  • Contributing to internal training, clinical resources, communities of practice and service development.
  • Collaborating with participants, families, support providers, schools, allied health professionals, medical teams and government agencies.

This is not primarily an operational management role. Unless specifically delegated, the position does not hold responsibility for staff performance management or workforce decisions. The emphasis is on advanced clinical practice, mentoring and clinical leadership.

 You’ll Bring

  • Extensive experience delivering Positive Behaviour Support across a range of presentations.
  • Advanced knowledge of functional behaviour assessment and Behaviour Support Plan development.
  • Strong clinical formulation, risk assessment and problem-solving skills.
  • Sound knowledge of the NDIS Behaviour Support Capability Framework and restrictive practice requirements.
  • Experience mentoring, coaching, supervising or supporting the development of other practitioners.
  • Excellent written communication and clinical documentation skills.
  • The ability to provide clear, respectful and constructive feedback.
  • Confidence collaborating with multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams.
  • Strong organisation and time-management skills.
  • A commitment to evidence-informed, rights-focused, neuro-affirming and trauma-informed practice.

Recognition as an Advanced/Specialist Behaviour Support Practitioner under the NDIS Behaviour Support Capability Framework is highly regarded. We will also consider experienced practitioners who can clearly demonstrate capability at this level and are working toward formal recognition. Qualifications or registration in psychology, behaviour analysis, occupational therapy, speech pathology, social work or another relevant discipline will also be highly regarded.

ROLE: PSYCHOLOGIST & BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT PRACTITIONER

This role is suited to a generally registered psychologist who wants to integrate psychological practice with Positive Behaviour Support rather than treating the person’s mental health, behaviour and environment as unrelated concerns. People rarely fit neatly into one discipline, and neither should their support. You will draw on psychological science, behavioural principles and person-centred practice to understand the whole person. This may include consideration of biological, psychological, social, sensory, communication, cognitive and environmental factors when developing assessment and intervention approaches.

Your Role May Include

  • Conducting psychological and behavioural assessments.
  • Completing functional behaviour assessments.
  • Developing integrated biopsychosocial and behavioural formulations.
  • Delivering evidence-informed psychological interventions within your scope of practice.
  • Supporting emotional regulation, coping, adjustment and participation.
  • Providing psychoeducation to participants, families and support teams.
  • Developing and reviewing Behaviour Support Plans.
  • Coaching support teams to implement proactive and skill-building strategies.
  • Supporting participants to increase independence, meaningful participation and quality of life.
  • Reducing reliance on restrictive practices wherever possible.
  • Preparing psychological reports, Functional Behaviour Assessments, Behaviour Support Plans, therapy summaries and clinical correspondence.
  • Collaborating with families, schools, support providers, allied health professionals, psychiatrists and other medical practitioners.

Regular psychology supervision, Behaviour Support mentoring and professional development are embedded within the position.

You’ll Bring

  • General registration as a psychologist with AHPRA.
  • Knowledge of contemporary psychological assessment, formulation and intervention.
  • An understanding of Positive Behaviour Support principles or a genuine interest in developing this capability.
  • Strong clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to integrate psychological, behavioural and environmental information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to build trusting relationships with participants and families.
  • Confidence working within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong organisation and time-management skills.
  • A commitment to ethical, evidence-informed, neuro-affirming and trauma-informed practice.

Experience working with people with disability, mental health needs, complex trauma or behaviours of concern will be highly regarded. Training in approaches such as CBT, ACT, DBT, or EMDR Therapy is also welcomed but not essential.

Supervision and Support

We take supervision seriously because good clinicians deserve meaningful support. Depending on your role, experience and professional requirements, you may access:

  • Weekly or fortnightly individual clinical supervision.
  • AHPRA-compliant psychology supervision where applicable.
  • BCBA/CBA or behaviour analytic supervision.
  • Senior Behaviour Support Practitioner mentoring.
  • Fortnightly peer supervision and reflective practice groups.
  • Specialist consultation for complex, high-risk or restrictive practice matters.
  • Opportunities to provide mentoring, training or supervision where this aligns with your capability and interests.

Mandatory Requirements

The successful applicant must hold or be willing to obtain and maintain:

  • Eligibility to work in Australia.
  • NDIS Worker Screening Clearance.
  • ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration.
  • National Police Check.
  • A current driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Suitability as a Behaviour Support Practitioner in accordance with the NDIS Behaviour Support Capability Framework.
  • General registration with AHPRA where applying for the psychologist position.

Ready to Roll With the Cart?

We’re quirky, compassionate and serious about good clinical work. This role may suit you if you want the flexibility and autonomy to practise thoughtfully, while still having access to a connected clinical team when work becomes complicated.
