About the Role:

A key priority for Black Dog Institute is to increase capabilities in human-centred design, user research and user experience (UX) design in order to achieve effective knowledge translation. The purpose of this position is to address this priority while we expand our team and skills across a portfolio of projects within the institute.

We are looking for a Senior UX Designer to work across new digital products within our Discovery & Innovation team. As a ‘hands on’ Senior UX Designer, you will be part of a team that delivers an intuitive, usable, and exceptional user experience to those seeking to improve their mental health.

The Senior UX Designer will be responsible for leading and conducting user-centred research, user interface design and prototyping with a focus on mobile apps and web technology, and engaging a wide range of youth, community and healthcare stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Research, Marketing & Communications, Learning & Development and IT teams for the development of digital programs, products and resources.
  • Work closely with the UX Manager to ensure alignment in product and engagement strategies and clear success metrics.
  • Advocate with stakeholders about UX design and methodology and its value in a dynamic team drawn from a range of research, healthcare and technical backgrounds.
  • Apply well developed technical skills to lead and deliver successful outcomes in user experience and user interface design of complex online or mobile projects
  • Explore design issues by undertaking user research and facilitating workshops to understand design needs and requirements
  • Create key UX/UI deliverables specific to each project such as personas, user flows, wireframes, interactive prototypes and design documentation
  • Communicate design solutions and rationale to product managers, service designers, researchers, engineers, and other stakeholders
  • Develop, enhance, and deliver product optimisation initiatives
  • Analyse and present data insights and research as an evidence base for design decisions
  • Collaborate with other designers and contribute to the growth of the design discipline at The Black Dog Institute
  • Develop and mentor junior members of the Black Dog Design Team

Selection Criteria:

Essential Criteria

  • Tertiary qualifications In Information Technology or Human Centred Design or a related field
  • Minimum 5+ years in a UX design role including 1 year in a Senior UX or UX/UI Design role
  • Proven track record of successfully planned and delivered end-to-end UX/UI design including exploring the issue, researching, ideating, designing, testing, measuring and active involvement in shipping a digital product to users
  • Experience recruiting, organising and leading usability testing for both web and mobile products
  • Demonstrated skills in planning and prioritising your own projects and task, working under pressure to tight deadlines
  • Proficient in UX design tools including Figma, Mural, Jira, Confluence or similar
  • Experience creating interactive prototypes and using prototyping tools like Figma, Sketch, Invision or similar
  • Proven communication and facilitation skills including ability to communicate key insights and learning to senior staff and team members using a range of audience-appropriate techniques, including but not limited to presentations and showcases including mock-ups & prototypes
  • A problem solver who loves big challenges, tackles them using a collaborative workflow, with the user front of mind
  • Great team player, positively contributing to the design team and culture

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience with the design and development and evaluation of motivational strategies or gamification in web or mobile
  • Portfolio demonstrating experience with research and design in mobile apps (iOS/Android) is advantageous
  • Familiarity with research governance and confidentiality in relation to health research
