For more than 30 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters in Australia has provided young people (7 to 17 years) in need of additional support, guidance and friendship, with a caring, trained and supported volunteer mentor, who becomes a long-term positive role model.

Job Summary:

The Ballarat Mentoring Coordinator will be responsible for the recruitment, screening and training of adult volunteer mentors from the community, the intake and assessment of young people, and matching of mentors to young people. Successful mentors will support young people (aged 7-17) through regular one-to-one mentoring, with ongoing support from the Mentoring Coordinator.

Required Skills and Experiences:

• Interviewing and assessment skills
• Training, meeting and workshop facilitation skills
• Experience in and understanding of working with children/young people and families
• An understanding of the issues associated with assessing, supervising & supporting volunteers
• Demonstrated ability to foster strong local partnerships and engage with local stakeholders
• Well-developed IT skills including Microsoft office suite and database management
• A self-starter
• Ability to build rapport and relate to a number of different stakeholder groups from a wide variety of backgrounds
• Excellent interpersonal skills and written communication skills
• Understanding of adolescent child development
• Understanding and experience of the social services system
• Understanding of mentoring and leadership philosophies and best practice
• Willingness to work across various sites as required
