We are looking for a motivated and thoughtful Policy Officer to join our Strategic Policy Unit in Darwin.
This is a rare opportunity to secure a long-term fixed-term role while contributing to meaningful justice outcomes across the Northern Territory.
In this role, you’ll work as part of a small, high-performing team responsible for shaping and delivering important justice policy reforms. A key focus of your work will be supporting the Territory’s commitments under the National Access to Justice Partnership 2025–2030, helping to strengthen the legal assistance sector and improve access to justice for the community.
Your day-to-day work will be varied and engaging. You’ll draw on your research and analytical skills to inform policy development, while also taking a hands-on role in coordinating and delivering projects in collaboration with government agencies and sector partners. The role involves engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, contributing to communication strategies, and preparing high-quality written materials—from reports and discussion papers to ministerial briefings and Cabinet submissions.
We’re seeking someone who is naturally organised, adaptable, and able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced and sometimes sensitive environment. You will be confident working both independently and as part of a close-knit team, and you’ll bring a collaborative approach to building strong relationships across government and the broader legal assistance sector. Strong communication skills—both written and verbal—will be key to your success, along with an ability to interpret complex information and translate it into clear, practical advice.
This role would suit someone with experience in policy, project management, public administration, or a related field. An understanding of the Northern Territory justice system or legal assistance sector would be highly regarded, but not essential.
In return, you’ll gain the opportunity to contribute to significant, long-term reform work in a supportive and professional team environment. This position offers stability through to 30 June 2030, along with ongoing opportunities to develop your skills and experience in a strategic policy setting.
