ARDS Aboriginal Corporation has been working with Yolŋu communities in north-east Arnhem Land for 50 years. We are led by Senior Yolŋu. Our vision is for Yolŋu to engage with the Balanda world as equals. We try to help Yolŋu to be strong in Yolŋu culture, and strong in understanding Balanda culture. We learn from each other and try to work in Yolŋu ways.

About the Role

ARDS’ Yolŋu Language and Culture Archive is a collection of Yolŋu language recordings, songlines, radio programs, books, education resources and other materials that have amassed over ARDS’ 50-year history. The archive project commenced in 2025 and is now at the stage of sharing it with Yolŋu communities and engaging community in testing and giving feedback on the archive.

This role will help advise and facilitate this important stage of the project. This role will also add information to the archive and help Yolŋu find things related to them.

Key Duties

Community Engagement:

  • Visit communities and run workshops and do consultations with team members about the archive
  • Coordinate activities and meetings in communities
  • Assist team members with project promotion, feedback and evaluation
  • Advise team members on who to consult about archive materials and project questions

Archive Management:

  • Give cultural training and support to the archive team
  • Create metadata (catalogue things in the archive)
  • Assess materials and give information about materials (eg. who is speaking, what language, what is it about)

About You

We're looking for someone who:

  • Has strong knowledge of Yolŋu clans, languages, people and places of Northeast Arnhem Land
  • Has strong understanding of kinship networks in Yolŋu communities
  • Is able to work respectfully and effectively with Yolŋu and balanda
  • Has experience working in cross-cultural settings practising cross-cultural communication
  • Has experience in running community consultations
  • Has conversational English speaking ability
